How to Write a Good Curriculum Vitae

Rocky Kamau
Writing curriculum Vitae is an art. You just cannot scribble about yourself on a piece of paper and call it curriculum vitae. Because, an interviewer first takes a look at your CV, and then goes ahead with the interview. Hence, you will have to be careful while writing your CV. Below are tips to help you in writing your curriculum vitae.
- It should briefly describe what you are. It should speak about your basic academic qualifications, extra-curricular activities, hobbies and interests, additional qualifications if any, your objectives, personal information like your date of birth, marital status and so on.
- When I say objective, I mean you should write a few sentences on why you want to work for that company and particularly in that position. It should be realistic and motivating.
- Just to impress your interviewer, do not give false information about hobbies and interests, or additional qualification, which you are not familiar with. Because, if you are questioned on that, you will be caught at the wrong foot. Simple mistakes like this might cost you a fortune.
- Do not forget to mention you complete contact details on the curriculum vitae.
- If you have work experience, you will have to mention your job responsibilities with that company clearly. If you have won or have been recognized for your work in your previous company, then nothing like it, just go ahead and put it on paper which would give you more chances.
- Do not send the same resume to different companies. And you will also have to update you curriculum vitae regularly.
- Put all the information in a particular format, like qualification, personal information, job responsibilities and others.
- The curriculum vitae should be printed, not handwritten. Today nobody prefers hand written resumes.
- Another thing which people ignore is any spelling or grammatical errors when you are drafting it. People feel that they would be overlooked. By ignoring such mistakes, you are inviting trouble for yourself.
- Make sure that you have a sentence, which declares that the information given by you is correct. Also do not forget to put your signature on your curriculum vitae.
Now that you have got a gist of it, spend some time in preparing your curriculum vitae. See to that, you have an answer to any question which arises from your own curriculum vitae. Because, it is your curriculum vitae which is first going to speak for you. All the best
