How to Write a Good Mother's Day Poem

Christian K. Martinez
Mother's day is coming up, now isn't it? It's always hard to imagine just what you should get your mom. At least it always was for me. Something almost any mother can enjoy, though, is a poem from their loving child.

A poem is a good gift, especially in this day and age where money is hard to come by. It delivers a message, "Even if I couldn't afford to get you something expensive, you're important enough to devote my time to." What's good about this, is it doesn't really matter if you're a good poet or not as long as you try for your mother.

That little bit of effort, the cutesy poems that don't quite go together, those are something that Mother's treasure and can mean a lot. A poem can go a long, long way and it has the advantage of being something heartfelt and loving.

Now, it's understandable to be worried about writing the perfect poem for your mother. She is your mother after all and deserves the best! As not everybody is a poet, there are a few steps you can follow to give just the right kind of poem to your mom for mother's day!

Step 1: Make it Special
There are lots of generic poems out there. A lot of people will even tell you how to make a generic poem, something trite and cute. And your mother would love that, she'll love any little poem you write for her. However, she deserves something more too, don't you think?

So make your poem something special. Think back try to imagine things she did for you as a child, little things that were cute and special and parental. Whenever I was young and scared my mother would sing with me, or she'd take me to Applebees when I did well at school because I loved getting the mozarella sticks. We used to play a story making game trading lines back and forth to create absurd and cutesy tales.
Those are the kind of memories you should look for, the things that make your mom say "Awww...s/he remembered!"

Step 2: Start Rhyming
Find a few of these memories and thoughts, and then put them all into a poem whose basic theme is "thank you, I love you, you're great!" It's officially time to start rhyming. Now there are lots of ways to make a poem but one of the easiest is using a simple ABAB rhyme scheme.

Where the last words in the A line rhyme with each other and the last words in the B lines rhyme with each other. Your rhymes don't have to be perfect, remember you're trying to get your message across. Your message matters more than the rhyming.

Step 3: Read Over and Revise
Read over it, see how it sounds. After doing this a few times edit it a little get it just right and then put it on something nice. Either handwritten or typed, on whatever sort of paper you think fits. As long as you can write nicely hand-written is always sweet, but so is having the poem typed and framed in a small little frame.

Step 4: Deliver to Mom

Now it's time to give it to your mother, smile tell her you love her. Give her the poem and know you've made her one happy mother!
