One of the first rule of thumb when writing a resume is to keep it as simple and precise as possible. Many believe that a resume should not be longer than a single page but that is often debatable. In the case of a software engineer, it might not be possible to maintain a single page resume going by their varied skills, experience and qualifications. However it's an individual's choice. An ideal resume of a software engineer must begin with a summary, giving very brief information about you as a person, along with your skills and a brief information on the domain you have been working in.
Keep it short and to the point; don't use words only to fill space. You can then move on to your employment history starting from your present employment in the reverse order. You need to clearly mention your roles and responsibilities in each organization giving exact details of your tenure as well. You don't have to go over board telling about your experience, just keep it short and be simple. Then move on to your software skills, here specify and give emphasis to areas you have specialized in and also mention other programming languages you know.
You will then move on to your educational qualification details giving detailed information on the year of passing and university, degree and specialization of your graduation. After completing the rough draft, check for grammar and spelling mistakes, use simple formats like Arial or Times New Roman with a standard font size of 12 or 10. Add bullets wherever required to your skills or employment history as it very essential in a resume of a software engineer. Avoid any kind of tables in the resume. It is always advisable for a software engineer to have two versions of the resume. Make sure you attach your photograph to your resume as it would be preferred by most HR executives.
Another unavoidable aspect of resume writing for a software engineer is to not use keywords too many times that are not relevant to your experience or skills as it will result in unnecessary interview calls. After completing it, you can get it proof read by someone since that would help in removing any mistakes you couldn't find. Make sure the purpose and objective is maintained throughout the resume.
Remember the employer is not interested in any other information other than what the job demands for a software engineer. Your resume should communicate to the employer that you would be an ideal choice for the job and would effortlessly blend in the employer business environment.
