How to Write a Non-Fiction Book

Jim Posey
Not surprisingly most people who start to write a non fiction book will end up giving up before the book is finished. Writing a non-fiction book can be an intimidating process for someone not experienced with the rigors of writing. New writers might become lost in a sea of structure and recommendations. This leads to procrastination, because, who wants to deal with a mess of a book? Remember these tips to not get bogged down in the process and instead focus on the art of communicating with your readership.

The key to writing a good non fiction book is to engage your audience. Your audience wants to be confronted with problems, questions, answers, and solutions. Without this mix of engaging aspects in your non fiction book, you are just speaking on a pulpit and not having a conversation with your audience which will end up reading rather blandly.

The first thing do when writing anon fiction book is producing an outline of the story. Remember that even though what you are writing is non fiction it still must be told through a story. In order for this story to be truly engaging you are going to want to write it in traditional story structure. You will find that most of the time the nonfiction story will fit quite easily into the traditional hero story arc. There is a hero that can be made out of any story worth telling.

Like any book you have to become acquainted with your characters before you can get right in on using them in the story. Write as much about your lead characters as possible. You should practically have a little biography written for each of the main characters. You have to understand their actions in the context of the whole of their life, which is impossible to do if you are not intimately affiliated with each of your characters. You should feel like you have been living with your characters for the length of time you are writing about them.

Another aspect of writing that many new writers forget about is foreshadowing, and all the other literary tricks you would use when writing a fiction piece. These literary tricks are there to engage your audience and there is no reason to throw them all out when you are writing a non fiction book.

When you can properly understand your characters you will find it far easier to write about them in a way that is convincing.
