How to Write a Paragraph

Dee Davis
It is good to know how to write, however it is more important to know how to write well. We first begin with a sentence and then a paragraph. In this article I want to review how to write a paragraph, and you ask, "What is a paragraph?" Well, I can answer that. A paragraph is an informative piece that includes a beginning, middle and an end. When writing a paragraph, it's important to know what it is you are going to write about. First and foremost, think about a subject. Secondly, write an introductory sentence, then fill in the details and lastly write your concluding sentence. In this article I will be looking at the basic parts of a paragraph: the topic sentence, the middle or the body of the paragraph and the closing.

It is important to understand that a paragraph always focuses on a specific topic. This can be developed in the form of a description, explanation, a story and a persuasive paragraph. Note that when writing a complete paragraph it should have enough information to give the reader an overall picture of the topic/subject being covered.

Introductory/Topic Sentence:

The topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph, and is usually at or near the beginning of the passage. When writing a topic sentence, try focusing on a specific subject. For example; My mother is a school teacher, therefore she attends yearly conferences giving lectures on the importance of a good education. It is very important that your sentence not only has subject, but also conveys a certain point of view or emotion.

Body:

This is the main part or bulk of the paragraph. Remember that this is where you provide supporting details about the topic. All the supporting sentences must explain the topic in detail. Explaining, using descriptions and vivid images are great ways to make your paragraph come alive. The body should have a clear order.

Closing:

The closing sentence reinforces the main idea of the topic sentence. It reminds the reader of the point of view conveyed earlier in the topic sentence.

For example: On account that my mom has such strong values; I am surprised she hasn't started her own school.

Now you are ready to put your pen to the paper.
