How to Write a Poem for Valentine's Day

Byron Durgan
Any of the guys out there reading this now have been in this predicament. It's almost Valentines Day and you have nothing to give her. Even worse you don't know what to give her. You want it to be special and from the heart instead of the same old flowers and chocolates. The good news is you can give her something from the heart. Poetry. We all know the ladies love it. I know I know, you're thinking you can't write poetry and that might be true. Today though I am going to show you how and I guarantee she'll appreciate it and love you for it.

Writing poetry isn't as difficult as many think. We're not writing a poem that will become legendary through the ages but we can still write a one that will melt her heart. So how do we start? Well, first who are we writing about? Your girlfriend. wife, significant other or maybe that crush you finally want to make a move on. Okay so we have the main subject for our poem. That was easy, what's next?

There are all kinds of different poetry. Some rhyme, some don't. Others have varying syllables per line and so on and so forth. We don't need to worry about that for the purpose here. Let's just try to make it rhyme. So what we are going to do it rhyme two lines, then move on. So for example line 1 will rhyme with line 2, line 3 will rhyme with line 4 and so on. So now we have a subject and we know we are going to do some rhyming. What next?

Now we need to choose what we are trying to let her know. Do we want to let her know we love her? Do we want her to know that she is special? Do we want her to know how beautiful she is? Pick an opening line that addresses her without using her name. Instead use any loving names or phrases you have for her. Also, try to make the line at least 5-10 words. It will make it easier to fit in later lines. Here are a few examples:

" I love you my dearest."

" My angel my dear love."

" My sweetheart my treasure"

" Dear shnookims my love."

So now that we've addressed her using a loving or pet name, pick a word that rhymes with the last work of the first line. For the examples above we could use ( in order ) nearest, above, forever and above. Now work backwards and fill in the second line. Here is an example using the first line.

I love you my dearest

My heat swells with you nearest

Easy enough? Now just keep repeating that same idea until you have one as long as you want it to be. It doesn't have to be pages and pages.

Poetry can share how we feel and help build a connection with those we care about. With a little help, guidance and some practice you can put together a poem that will wow her this Valentines Day. After all, she won't be judging it for merit. She'll be listening to the thought and effort you put in to make her feel special. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
