How to Write a Resume when You Have an MBA

Christina Pomoni
Your resume is your marketing tool to explain to your potential employer why you should be hired. It is the first - and often critical - piece of information that an employer considers as it is a well-constructed summary of your skills, experience, and abilities. However, before getting hired, you need to get the interview, which means that you should definitely consider some important factors when writing your MBA resume.

A successful MBA resume is not much different than any other resume in terms of structure. However, what needs to be taken care of is to make sure that you project your business leadership skills through your resume. Do not forget that possessing an MBA degree insinuates that you are able to manage a firm and be involved in the strategic decision making. Therefore, you resume as an MBA graduate should bear elements that would persuade your future employer that you are the most suitable person for the job among other successful MBA candidates.

Here are some important factors that would make your MBA resume outstanding:

1/ The objective you state on the top of your resume should be clear and leave no doubt about what your job aspirations are. If you include a broad objective it would suggest lack of professional direction. Therefore, do keep it short and precise avoiding clichés such as "looking for a challenging career in a competitive business environment".

2/ Your professional experience should describe your responsibilities, skills and accomplishments in an accurate and precise way. Do not generalize. Instead, be detailed-oriented when writing about former employment and state the number of years of experience. Also, do not forget to include any internship, part-time occupation and volunteer jobs, provided they are added-value for your resume.

3/ Build a professional image of yourself and ascertain your credibility. Presenting briefly, yet accurately your leadership track or your functional experience is strong evidence of your job skills but also of your increasing job responsibility over time.

4/ Use buzzwords and action verbs, when you describe a specific field in your resume. Buzzwords prompt a general picture of yourself and your skills and facilitate your future employer to remember you in a code method. Action verbs create a successful profile because they convey an initiative-taker individual, creative and achiever.

5/ Omit mundane information. Remember that you are an MBA graduate and therefore high school information should not be mentioned in your resume.

6/ Your resume should not be longer than two pages provided you state rich work experience and accomplishments.

7/ Avoid funky, illegible fonts, and typographical and grammatical errors.
