How to Write a Romantic Poem She'll Remember

Steve Helmer
As men, we are sometimes raised to believe poetry is for girls and, because of that, the idea of writing any poem, especially a romantic one, seems like something that should be forbidden or scary.

And, even though I'll admit I once felt that way too, I have found, through my relationship with my wife that writing poetry is often a great way to show your feelings for the woman you love in a way that is much more personal and unique than a piece of jewelry or your typical Hallmark greeting card.

In fact, one of the ways I ended up winning her heart in the first place was by writing her poems and it is something I still do today. And, I'm able to do it with relatively little difficulty by following a few simple guidelines.

First, and most important, come to grips with your feelings. You're with your wife/girlfriend for a reason and you need to take the time to ask yourself why. And, when I say this, what I mean is you need to examine the specifics. What is it that attracts you most to her? What features do you think are the best? These things will make writing a poem much easier.

Personalize it as much as possible. This is the one thing that will separate your poem from the generic greeting card I mentioned before. Don't just mention her beautiful eyes. Talk about her beautiful green (or whatever color they are) eyes. Don't just compliment her perfume, use the brand. Not only does it make the poem more about her, it shows her you pay attention to her.

Rhyming helps but isn't always necessary. As I mentioned before, I write a lot of poems for my wife and, as a result, I do run out of things to rhyme with. And, I know a lot of people get frustrated when something like that happens to them. But, I have also found I can get away with one or two lines not rhyming as long as I stick to the first two rules. Of course, if you insist on rhyming everything, I have found you can get help simply by doing an internet search under "rhymes with" and the word you want to rhyme.

If you get stuck, listen to some love songs. Or, as I will do on occasion, look up the lyrics. Believe it or not, this is a great way to get reminded of something you want to tell her about or word a certain phrase you're stuck with. Just don't copy the song. It wouldn't be personal that way.

Don't be afraid to share it with everyone. It's OK if you just want to share your feelings in private. But, it does mean a whole lot more if you show her you aren't afraid to let everyone know how you feel about her. Unless she is one of those people who would be too embarrassed by something like that, publish it for everyone to see (there are plenty of sites that will do that) and make sure her girlfriends see it so they can be jealous of her.

As I said before, poetry can be a great way to show her what she really means to you and these steps can make it much easier.
