How to Write a Successful Term Paper

Chris Tidwell
Ah the joys of writing term papers, everyone loves them right? Well term papers are a real pain and time consuming, but with a few simple tips and tricks you'll be done in no time and have an award winning paper you and your teacher can be proud of.

Choose a subject that is different yet interesting. Everyone knows just about all there is to know about the life and times of JFK, or Abraham Lincoln, but they may not know about other famous figures in history. Singers and song writers are an interesting subject to research on, they are well know, but their involvement in society before they were discovered is virtually unknown to the common person. So try and choose a topic that is different and exciting.

Of course you have to have a good opening paragraph and a strong beginning but how do you write such a thing? Well start with a hook, something that will grab the attention of your teacher and show him or her that you have written a serious paper, one that is worth a full sit down and read, rather then a minor glance and grade. Don't bore the reader to death with the first few lines, but rather tease them, and make them want to read more.

Research is very important to a successful term paper, so you have to hit the books, or more likely the internet. Make sure to get key points and facts about what you're writing about and incorporate them into your writings. Weird and strange facts surrounding a person always go over well, so be sure to dig deep into their past, into their religion, or societies they may have been involved with.

Don't have tunnel vision when writing about something, don't be afraid to branch out and write about other events, places, or people that influenced the subjects life. If you are writing about a person born during world war II then make sure to include something about world war II. Talk about how this would have impacted their lives, and the lives of their parents.

The early portion of a persons life, or the conception of an idea that turned into something amazing will be some of the best points in your writing. People are draw to the beginnings of things, they want to know where ideas came from, how people lived prior to success, and incorporating a good and strong beginning into your term paper will be the most important thing you do. It is with the "Beginning" portion of this paper that will make or break you. If a teacher reads something that is sloppy and uninformative then they will have a sour taste in their mouths for the rest of your paper. You have always heard about "First impressions" well, your paper is no different, the first impression is critical.

Now you have a beginning so obviously you are going to need a middle and an end in terms of the life of the person. These areas are probably more well known to the reader then the beginning portion, so just make sure you have all your facts straight, and don't spend too much time here. Yes the middle and end are very important, but they have been done to death, and teachers are going to want to read something different and interesting then a full fledged history report, so touch on key elements in these areas but don't let this consume your term papers body.

Now once you have an idea about what facts and points your going to use in your term paper, set up a system of organization. Make sure you know where certain elements of the story go, and how to incorporate them into the body of the paper. Your teachers and readers are going to want to read something they can follow along with and has a good flow, so make sure that your paper has those factors. Don't scatter facts randomly through the paper, make sure they all are in an appropriate place, and be sure you have a clean and neat paper to turn in for review.

Last tip I have for you is to not ramble on and on. Many people get stuck on one point of interest with a subject and devote entire pages to that one fact. That's great if you know a lot about this one section of a person life or the invention of something, but don't drag it out just to fill up room. Also don't be a know it all and write a 15 page paper when all it needs to be is 10, it will just irritate your teacher.

So that's my experience with term papers, and I have never really had a problem. Just be sure to keep these little tips in mind when writing, and don't wait till the last minuet to start writing, otherwise you may end up pulling an all nighter, and those are never fun with a full schedule the next day.
