You need a place to write and be comfortable, while having shelves to store your work or reference books on. You will need a quiet yet small place, where you can work without being disturbed. Next you will need a proper reading lamp with a desk that is large enough to hold a computer and other items that you may need. The computer should have a word processing program like Microsoft Word, which will help you in your new journey as an author.

Creating a Work Place

Your writing space should be big enough to work in comfortably, yet allow you to take notes and store information that you and need in the future. You'll need a comfortable chair and a cup full of pens and pencils. This way, you will not have to waste time looking for something to write with when taking notes of filling out papers. Always keep a set of sticky notes, paper clips, and pencil sharpener within hands reach.

Creating a Storage Place

In your new office make sure you leave room for a filing cabinet, printer, or other necessities for storing information. Keeping track of what you are submitting to magazine and the letters you are receiving, even if they are rejection letters. Always keep your references and source information in a special spot, just in case you need to produce them to an editor. Never keep all of your files on your computer only, instead backup your hard drive to Mozy.com or Carbonite.com.

References Books

Keep your reference books nearby, since you will be referring to them a lot through the writing process. You should purchase a dictionary, thesaurus, and other self-help book written for new author. Additionally, the internet will come handy when you are researching information for the fiction or non-fiction you are currently writing. Check with other authors about what books they may recommend and take time to read them.

Before you pursue a freelance writing career, be sure to find a circle of writers that will help you with tips and motivation. Stay organized and you will find that you career will benefit from taking the time to organize tax information and money earned. Establish a daily writing schedule and set rules for yourself like no phone or television during that time. Discuss your writing schedule with you family and post the times on your office door.
