How to Use Wrought Iron to Decorate Any Home

Charlotte Kuchinsky
My daughter and I both love decorating with wrought iron pieces. From beautifully scrolled baker's racks to simple decorative shelves to intricate wall pieces, wrought iron often fits the decorating bill; especially for country homes. Mixing textures and styles within any room of a home, country or otherwise, can add interest as well as beauty. I love mixing wrought iron wall pieces with artwork. It helps to automatically draw the eye to the exact focal point that I want to be noticed.

In my bedroom, I used wrought iron in a number of ways. I chose a few wall pieces to help accent what would otherwise be boring wall space. I used other pieces to show off candles, add some greenery, and accent a bureau.

Wrought iron pieces can, of course, stand on their own as wall décor, particularly for a country home. My daughter uses it to accent the wall up the side of her staircase, along with other country designs.

On her newly completed sun porch, she used wrought iron planters and shelves to hold her many plants and flowers. They helped to pull the room together by balancing out the texture of the wicker furniture. They also helped to set off the wrought iron bar that my husband and I have her a few years back for her anniversary.

In a recent design job that my daughter and I did for a friend's country home, we added a wrought iron baker's rack to her dining nook. Most of the time, it serves as a lovely backdrop for her bric-a-brac. However, during dinner parties, it becomes the perfect country buffet.

To add balance, we added a wrought iron wine rack and a couple of floor candles. Mixed with her old world country dining set and carefully chosen artwork, the results were a very warm and inviting area.

I mix wrought iron with wood in my kitchen area to set off my chef décor and give the area a slight country feel. It brings in a different texture to keep all of the heavy wood from overpowering the small space.

One of my daughter's favorite uses for wrought iron pieces are to add wall candles to a room. Ever the romantic, she loves to set a mood to welcome her husband home after a long day at work.

Rather than sitting hundreds of candles around a room, she uses wall candles mixed with a view other standing pieces. This allows a room to be bathed in candlelight at varying angles. A side benefit is that the cleanup is almost non existent afterwards.

I, too, like using wrought iron for candles. I have several wrought iron candleholders, both wall and free standing, scattered throughout my home.

While most wrought iron pieces generally come in basic black or a deep bronze coloring, that doesn't mean they have to remain that color. I often paint my wrought iron to perfect match the color scheme of the room.

If you seek to add a bit of fun, flair, or fancy to your country - - or any home, for that matter - - you might want to consider the beauty, versatility, and texture of wrought iron.

Ugh...I must be odd. I think it's ugly. Decorate with flowers and leaves! But that's just me. This is well written as usual.

These are nice and dismiss the ideas of wrought iron as heavy and depressing.

What a wonderful idea! You are making me want to in my car and go find some ironworks for my wall. Loved the first two photos - for some reason I couldn't get the others to come up for me.
