How Yoga Can Help Cure Your Depression
If Your One of the 13 Million People that Suffer from Depression, Toss Your Antidepressants and Try Yoga for Depression
Although you may feel alone if you are someone that suffers from depression, you share your illness with over 13 million people. I've just put together a short list of people we love and admire that have suffered from depression at some point in their life, or continue to deal with it on a regular basis. John Lennon, Sylvia Plath, Audrey Hepburn, Virginia Woolf, Vincent Van Gough, and Jim Carrey are just a few of the famous people that have suffered from Depression. The list goes on.
People that suffer from depression usually choose antidepressants to help them mentally function. As someone that has suffered from depression, I am very familiar with antidepressants. After my life felt like it was crumbling, and several panic attacks later I resorted to a dose of Zoloft. (A popular over the counter antidepressant). My experience with taking medication to cure my blues, was not the answer for me. Instead of curing my depression, It just made me feel numb. I felt more lost then I ever did before. Now instead of feeling sad all the time, I didn't have any feelings. I was a functioning robot that could perform the tasks that I needed to get me by. I had no motivation for life. I was a sad sight to look at really.
How did I get myself out of this deep hole that I fell into? Well I have one small answer for you, yoga. I watch a lot of TV, and came across the Fit TV channel. Since I have the privilege of be able to record shows, I decided to record Namaste Yoga with Kate Potter. I didn't have money to go out and take yoga classes, so I thought I would give Kate Potter's yoga class a try. This was one of the best descions I've ever made in my life. I have never felt as good as I do now. I have been practicing yoga now for one month and it has changed my whole outlook on life. A person that is depressed usually has a hard time concentrating. Depression can take away life's pleasures and make you feel lost and alone. Depression creates a barrier that traps you inside your mind. Yoga helps release your mind, and takes you to a safe haven. Yoga can help you to concentrate more, breathe better, and release tension that has been building up. You don't have to be the most flexible person in the world to do yoga. I like Kate Porter's yoga on Fit TV, because its great for beginners. I learned several different yoga poses in just a few days.
If you want to take an alternative route away from mainstream antidepressants, try yoga for one month, and see what it can do for you. You have nothing to loose, if it doesn't make you happy at least it will get you in shape!
