I practiced yoga and walked daily throughout most of my pregnancy, just about until the last few weeks, when my belly was so huge that I could hardly move! But I did it as long as I could and it paid off. The delivery was natural and things went well when it came time to push. I did have the epidural, but I could feel the contractions and knew when to push, so when it was time I did so well that the doctor was amazed! I am 5'2 and tiny, the baby was 8 lbs 5 oz so it was not an easy slide... but yoga helped me gain strength and I was able to push pretty hard and effectively.
It is best to stick with yoga that is specially taylored for pregnancy, since this will ensure that you don't get into any positiions that would harm you or your baby. Pregnancy yoga also focuses on poses and sequences that best benefit your condition, so this will work for you to get the most of your practice. There are countless DVD's for pregnancy and most of them are quite good so if you choose to practice at home there are many options. Look for one that best compliments your exercise level as well as the trimester which you are in. If you chose to go to a class, also look for one that best suits your needs, there are usually different levels from beginner to advanced and anything in between.
To compliment your yoga practice make sure that you also get some form of low impact aerobic exercise, the best way to do this is by simply taking walks. Do a few 10-15 minute walks everyday, or a longer 30-45 minute one, whatever your time permits. Make sure to consult with your doctor if this is ok, because there are times when it is not safe to walk or exercise in some pregnancy situations. Also if you feel it is too painful or uncomfortable to walk, specially towards the end of the third trimester, don't force yourself, take it easy, put your feet up and relax.
Yoga and walking is what I did when I was pregnant and I can tell you that it really helped. The poses I practiced through the DVDs I used were very effective in working the areas that are needed in time of delivery. It also kept me from gaining extra pounds and helped in staying within the recommended weight gain range. Of course in addition to helping with the pregnancy I also got the many benefits that anyone can enjoy from practicing for the joy of it as well as for fitness and wellbeing.
I thoroughly recommend yoga for any pregnant woman, with the go ahead of your doctor of course, and I am sure you'll reap all the benefits I mentioned and possibly more. You will also probably practice it long after your delivery once you discover how wonderful yoga can make you feel.
