Howard Area Community Center Has Volunteer Hours Available

The first time I volunteered at the Howard Area Community Center, located at 7648 North Paulina Street in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, I helped fund raise. Although I still enjoy this type of volunteer work, the Howard Area Community Center offers even more opportunities. Since I frequently volunteer with my cousin, it was no surprise that she asked me to join her to be an adult literacy tutor. Although I haven't signed up yet, because of the time requirement, I learned that you teach English as a second language to adults or teach them how to read.

Although I'm extremely interested in volunteering, the opportunity requires that you give them a six month commitment. In addition, I was also told that I would need to attend 2 six hour training sessions. My cousin told me, however, that I would be able to choose evenings, weekdays or Saturday mornings to volunteer.

My cousin, who is a school teacher, loves helping literacy programs. Although you do not have to be a teacher, I feel that her education has helped her excel in this position. I have also helped with the Howard Area Community Center's Feed The Hungry program, where I've picked up leftover bread from Panera and helped bag it up for delivery to the clients. You need to get there early in you're interested in helping with this program.
