Howjsay.Com: An Online Talking Dictionary

An Overview of a Very Useful Pronunciation Site

Timothy Liu
howjsay.com is an online talking dictionary that gives the English pronunciation of words.

When you first enter the site, you will be presented with a text box in which you may input words or phrases. When you have completed inputting the text you wish to have pronounced, click on the Submit button. The site will then locate your word and pronounce it in English.

If the site is unable to find your word, it will list close matches. Words that are colored in pink can be pronounced by simply moving your mouse cursor over the word. The site will then automatically pronounce that word.

If the word you have inputted has an American way of saying the word, the site may also include that version of pronouncing the word.

If you wish to type in a new set of text, simply delete the current text and enter in new text. You may also browse available text by clicking on the Browse button.

Once a text has been submitted to the site, not only will the site respond with the precise pronunciation of the word but also a few other useful options. Below the input text box, there is a drop down menu that displays a good number of different languages that you can translate the chosen text to. The translated version of the inputted text will appear below the drop down menu.

Another useful tool that is available and conveniently located is a dictionary. To the right of the drop down menu that includes the many languages that you can translate your text into is a link to the dictionary entry for the text you have submitted to the site. A pop-up window will open that will display the definition of the word you have submitted.

The site also offers a useful piece of software called Cleverkeys that can be downloaded for free courtesy of Lexico. This software basically allows you to hear words pronounced by Hearjsay in a variety of different programs for both Windows and Mac systems. There are simple, easy-to-follow instructions available on howjsay.com. To the right of the input text box and below the Browse button, you can see a link to Tools. Simply click on this to be taken to an instructional site that will help you download and start using Cleverkeys.

howjsay.com is great for new English speakers who need help with the pronunciation of certain words. The clear, distinct pronunciation of the site provides a good resource that allows new English speakers to hear how to say words properly so that they too can pronounce these words correctly.
