Detailed How-to Guide for Building Better Garden Soil

Brandon Lambert
Having good soil is essential for any garden, and unless you live in a newly built home where your soil is brand new, the odds of having decent soil are minimal. But don't be discouraged, you can still have a beautiful garden. The key is to spend more time concentrating on your soil, using these five steps you should be able to improve the life of your flower beds and plants. You will also be able to grow a wider variety of plants, including cactuses, which look beautiful in certain breeds like the golden ball cactus.

Things you'll need:

Raised Beds

Proper Garden Tools

Proper Plants

Constant Work

Watering

First Step:

Building Raised Beds for your plants is a great way to enhance your soil quality. Raised Beds are generally 3-4 inches tall (this is high enough to improve you soil), these beds are essentially tall planters. Basically once you build these beds all you will need to do is fill them with organic topsoil, it should take a few weeks but you will see drastically improved soil quality.

Second Step:

Another way to improve your soil quality is to aerate the soil; you will then add bags of organic compost. You can also add fertilizers if you think these will make a difference; I personally only use organic ingredients. Before you add your new plants to the area you will want to till the land once more, this will ensure that the soil is broken down. Once your area has been well tilled you will notice a dramatic difference in the way your plants react, this is the most common method for building better garden soil.

Third Step:

You can also build better garden soil by adding compost or topsoil to your existing dirt, this is another common method that some people experience reasonable results using. You will want to create a nice sized mound of soil, this can take about an hour and you will notice a difference in your soil immediately.

Fourth Step:

You can work with your existing flower beds, just remove excess weeds or bulbs and then begin tilling the land. This will slowly begin to loosen the previous soil, I usually mix in organic compost while I till. This method is ideal if you don't want to put the time into building a whole new garden bed, just add your plants and you can enjoy your rejuvenated soil.

Fifth Step:

In Step 5 you basically just add to a good thing, you will want to keep the quality of your soil. So I usually add organic compost to my flower beds every spring and fall, this keeps the soil nice and soft. And if you are really insistent on having that perfect soil make sure to till your land often, this is one of the easiest ways you can experience picture perfect soil.

Using these methods you can experience the best soil in the neighborhood. With persistence and the proper tools like organic mulch and a tiller your flower beds should look much healthier and luscious.
