How-To Halloween Haunted House at a Low Cost

Jessica Ballard
Halloween is right around the corner and decorating for them is always fun, but it can be expensive. Here are some ideas for things you can make and places you can go to turn your house into the best haunted house on the street at a low cost.

Step 1:
Go to Deals or the Dollar Tree. When it comes to the holidays, a lot of people forget about these dollar shops, but they are really a good place to go. These shops have things like vampire door knockers, skeleton garland, pumpkin lights, Halloween music and more. They have tons of decor for inside the home and out. The best part is, most of it is only a dollar per item. You can even get treats and treat bags while you're there at low-cost. Also, you can usually get invites at these places too at low-cost.

Step 2:
Plan ahead to build your own decor. Get white trash bags, draw a face and tie up blown up balloons inside. Attach string and hang these little ghosts all over the trees outside! Go to your local hardware store and get a few bags of soil. You can get it for as cheap as one dollar per bag at places like Menards. With this, you can make fake graves, no digging required. Just put a little in a rectangle somewhere and your yard. Paint an old piece of wood or a piece of sturdy cardboard to make it look like a headstone. For even more fun, make arms or heads coming out of the graves. For more on making Halloween characters, click here.

Step 3:
Take your family and have a little fun at a local pumpkin patch! It's a great way to have a little outdoor fun while getting ready for your Halloween party. Most pumpkin patches have the pumpkins already cut and ready to go (the stems can't just be picked, but need to be cut), but the farms usually have other fun things to do such as hay rides or corn mazes.

Step 4:
The little touches go a long way. Believe it or not, streamer is a great, inexpensive way to add a little spice to your haunted house. Put a little in doorways. For Halloween, leave it tattered and uneven. You can drape it from the ceiling and twist it for an elegant effect. Throw around some Halloween confetti or some orange and black tinsel. Get tons of spiderweb decor and put it everywhere. Sometimes the cheap things are what pulls the whole haunted house together.

Step 5:
Start decorating! Luckily, you don't need to wait until the last minute for this either. Why not start in September? You may not want to throw all the confetti around just yet, but you can everything else up if you want. Then, you get to enjoy the festivities that much longer. It's also time to start decorating those pumpkins! Try the battery operated lights from the dollar store to add some spook when your guest arrive! It's also time to get on those invitations!

Step 6:
Have fun, enjoy your party, and try not to be too scary!
