How-to Make a Yarn Pom-pom

Rachelle

You see pom-poms used in many different ways; as embellishments, for crafts, or just played with. They are really very easy to make, even though they look complicated, even kids can make them. All you need to make pom-poms is cardboard, scissors, and yarn. In just a few minutes, by following these easy instructions, you can make a pom-pom,too.

1) On a piece of cardboard, draw two identical circles; you can trace the top or bottom of a glass. Then, draw a smaller identical circle in both circles. After you have done this, cut out the small circle as well as a 'slice' from the side of the whole circle. You should end up with two c-shaped cutouts- the bigger the circles are, the bigger the pom-pom will be. (pic #1)

2) Hold both the circles together, and starting away from the end, wind yarn all around the c-shape. Continue to wind until there isn't any cardboard showing. (pic #2)

3) After you have wound the yarn around, take your scissors and cut the yarn in between the two circles; make sure not to let any pieces come loose. Cut all around the two circles. (pic #3)

4) Then, take the yarn still hanging on and wind it around both circles, through the middle; where you cut the yarn. After you have done so, tie a tight knot, so small strands of yarn don't escape from the pom pom. (pic#4)

5) Make sure all the knots are snug and tight, and trim the ends of the yarn to make it even all over, if you have to. Lastly, fluff the yarn; you have just made a pom-pom.

You can use pom-poms in many different ways; you can create little animals and toys, use them as embellishments for scarves and hats, or anything else, the possibilites are endless.
