Bridging Mobility and Performance

Right now, as summer is fast approaching, students are preparing to go off to school and are stocking up on their needed supplies. That often includes a laptop for the new college student. By far the most popular size would be the 15.4 inch. This notebook offers good mobility with a larger sized screen giving the consumer the best of both worlds. I've had the opportunity to get my hands on the HP Pavilion DV6445LUS a notebook that has recently seen excellent sales. I'm going to give it a quick review, let's get started with some of the hardware basics.

Hardware:

Processor: 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 dual-core

Storage Space: a 160 GB Serial ATA hard drive

RAM: 2 GB RAM (this is an un-upgradable maximum)

Optical drive: a CD R/RW with integrated 8x LightScribe DVD -/+ RW burner

Imaging: an integrated Web Cam (producing an image on par with a cellular phones' camera)

Graphics Accelerator: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150

Dimensions and weight: 14.0" x 10.1" x 1.5" and weighs in at a whopping 6.14 pounds.

This notebook has a unique exterior finish so I recommend having a look at this laptop in person before you buy. The processor allows for quick boot times of vista and doesn't bog down during simple computing. The 2GB of RAM allows vista to run smoothly but the fact that this is unupgradable is an indication that this notebook may be slightly antiquated. I like the webcam it is a great feature and is becoming more and more standard. The mobility is average I like the dimensions but the weight is slightly higher than I would have liked to see.

Connectivity:

Integrated Bluetooth

3 2.0 USB ports (these can be used to connect most peripherals from scanners, to iPods, to input devices like keyboards and mice)

1 FireWire port (this is used for high speed data transfer historically between digital camcorders and sometimes other compatible PC's)

1 VGA port (this is a standard monitor connection)

1 S-Video port (a typical connection used for a projector or compatible TV)

1 ExpressCard slot (this is used to temporarily insert hardware like a bluetooth adapter or a cellular modem)

2 Audio outputs / 1 Microphone input

5 in 1 memory card reader (to be used to that the consumer can directly insert the memory from their mobile devices)

1 Modem port (so that this notebook can dial up an internet connection)

The connectivity is everything I would expect from a notebook this size. There really isn't anything missing. This is a great notebook for the majority of new notebook buyers. It is going to please about any consumer with its abilities to get plenty of work done and the power to have fun with movies, music and some games. It has an average online retail price of $800 which is right on target with a notebook of its capabilities. I wouldn't wait around on this one, I don't foresee any drastic price drops in the immediate future.
