HP Pavilion Dm1z Laptop Review

J G Hodnette
The HP Pavilion dm1z is finally here and after years of hype, finally we can all see and experience the new special chips that HP has been hinting at. The short answer: we are not disappointed. This computer pulls together incredible new hardware, some clever software ideas, and good old fashioned clever industrial design which makes this laptop a conversation starter when you pull it out in Starbucks to work on your next novel or play a little WoW.

Design

First of all, we have to say that the look of the new dm1z is pretty great. The screen is about as thin as a screen can be, the machine is light, though not particularly small, and it comes with a full keyboard and then some; if you like to keep sticky notes on your laptop then you'll find some room there. The ClickPad that is an HP creation is much better than in previous versions, but we still enjoy a mouse better.

Hardware

So, is this new laptop as powerful as everyone has been hoping? Well, basically yes. The great thing about it is that it maintains incredible power and graphics (for those gamers out there) without running too hot or using too much battery. Compared to other laptops I've tried, the HP Pavilion dm1z is definitely up there with the fastest. You can run multiple windows and game all at once without any annoying lag or freezing. Occasionally you'll hear the fan powering on, but it runs pretty cool and has a battery life of five to nine hours. I won't say that this laptop is leaps and bounds above its competitors, but it does do what others can do for longer and that makes a difference when you're on a long plane ride or something similar.

Software

The laptop also comes with some nifty software ideas. The computer guru will probably get rid of these immediately in order to do things their own way, but we thought a few of them were fun to play with. For example, there is a nice program that sets the fan mode in much the same way that you can set the battery mode (there is high performance, maximum cool, or balanced). However, like most companies nowadays, you will find some programs preloaded onto your laptop that you may not want. This can be a drag when you just spent some of your time getting it setup only to find that you have more work to do, and it may be the worst thing about this laptop. That having been said though, it is about the best worst thing you can find.

This is a great new laptop that is awesome to play around with and own. It will get you through whatever you need to do without heating up or crashing. With technology progressing so rapidly, you will want something that can last for a while. This should be the laptop to do that.

I need another one. Gateways are absolutely some of the worst Laptops to buy. I have purchased two Gateways and have had my fill of problems. They do not abide by their warranty and they do not work with you at all when you call them. So I will try an HP next. Thanks for the review.
