H&R Block Free and Easy Tax Software

How to Use H&R Block Free File

Katie Sharp-Dierks
Whether you get a refund or you wind up owing taxes, no one looks forward to the mounds of paperwork and hours of concentration we can devote to our taxes. One way you can simplify your tax season this year is to use H&R Block free file. You can access this program, and several other free filing programs, through the IRS website. If you click on the e-file link from the IRS website, you'll be given a list of options. Look for a link to see if you qualify for free filing. Qualifications are based mostly on income. If you don't qualify for free filing, you can still use the IRS website to find a good e-filing program.

If you qualify, I recommend using the H&R Block version of free file. It's safe, reliable, and easy. The program automatically checks your return for errors, and you can save and go back to it if you need to. H&R Block free file provides easy to understand instructions, offers answers to questions you may come up with along the way, and can save you from making a costly mistake resulting in an audit. A great deal of mistakes on tax returns occur because of handwritten errors. Using H&R Block eliminates handwriting errors.

I've used H&R Block for two years in a row, and plan to use it again. If you use this program, it will save your information for you for later reference. Make sure you save your login name and password in a safe place. You can access your account and either check on the status of your return, or print copies if you didn't when you first filed, or you lost or destroyed your copy. While you can access your information for at least several months, you should always have a paper copy of your return, and save it and your W-2 for at least seven years. Because you are filing electronically, you don't send in the W-2 forms unless the IRS requests it. You may have to send in a signature form the first time you e-file, although not everyone has to.

When you e-file your taxes, you get confirmation from the IRS within 2 days that they have received your return. If you e-file and choose direct deposit, you may be able to receive your refund within as few as 10 days! My very favorite part? I don't have to pay someone else to do something I can do myself! I found H&R Block taxcut so easy to use, I even offered to do a few friends tax returns for them.
