HTC's New HD2 Compared to the IPhone

Timothy Knuth
The new product HD2 by HTC has a similar look and feel as the iPhone and the screen is amazing, even bigger than the current iPhone, but I wanted to see how it really stacked up to the most popular iPhone product.

The HD2 has a nice sleek design, very thin and is just a little larger than the iPhone. This allows you to view video on a 4.3" screen compared to the 3.5inch screen of the iPhone. Well this is just about where the HD2 leaves the iPhone eating dust. Other than the new 1Ghz processor compared to the iPhone's 600Mhz, there is not a lot that this phone offers over the iPhone. Unless you wanted to include in this scenario the price tag. Amazon sells the HD2 for almost $800.00 while Newegg has this same unit priced around $730.00. This is a huge difference over the $199.99 price tag for a iPhone. The only advantage that you have in paying between $700 and $800 for the phone is that the phone is not locked and can be used with any carrier.

The iPhone is 4.5 inches high, 2.4 inches wide and .48 inches thick while the HD2 is 4.74 inches high, 2.64 inches wide and .43 inches thick. So size is almost the same, but what is inside also counts.

Hardware specifications show the real differences between the HD2 and the iPhone. The iPhone is deleivered with 8GB, 16 GB or 32GB or ram, while the HD2 supports 320MB Ram and a 512MB flash card. Both phones have adopted all the Wi-Fi and cellular options available, so either phone will connect you to the Internet, phone service, etc.

The iPhone has a long battery live both for standby and when being used in talk mode. The HD2 does have a 5Megapixel camera compared to the iPhone's 3 Megapixel. However the iPhone has over 70,000 applications while the HD2 has about 20,000. One feature that does help the HD2 standout is the ability to multitask, while the iPhone cannot at this time.

I think that if HTC can get the price down to under $300, offer more memory and storage options and improve battery life they will give the iPhone some real competition. HTC is going in the right direction and this is a nice product. Most certainly the multimedia capabilities are great and the screen is awesome.

I did like the overall layout and ease of use of this product. I think one of the bigger advantages that the HD2 has is again being able to be used with any carrier, but this will only be a benefit once the price has been dropped some.
