Make a budget
This is vital. Many times we spend far more than we realize. We may have the best of intentions, and every purchase may be small, but a small purchase here, a small purchase there, and voila, it adds up to beyond our means. That is why it is important to make a budget so that you know exactly what you have to spend on certain items. If you go over in one area, you will want to account for it by lowering another area. Really think about your budget with a large family. You may want to give each individual person a budget so that he or she knows what they personally can spend. Also, you may want to put it together as a family affair so that everyone understands what you are doing and has input into it. That will also help teach the younger children about handling money and making a budget.
Save money where you can
A big family will have some large costs that are inevitable. You cannot just decide to forgo food for a month because things are tight. There are different things that you can do to save money with a big family, and you should include this in your family planning. For instance, you may be able to save a lot of money by buying bulk items at warehouse clubs such as Costco and Sam's Club. Also, use a lot of hand-me-down's with the kids to save money on clothes. You can keep things fresh by adding different accessories, which cost less than a whole new outfit. Cooking instead of going out to eat can also save a tremendous amount of money.
Try to put some money into savings
With a large family, you will have costs down the road such as college costs and potentially emergency costs. If you can swing it try to put some money away. There are tax advantageous things you can do, which can save and make you a lot of money in the long run if you are careful and start early. A financial planner may help you get on the right track.
