Seven Chick Flicks Guys Can Enjoy

Great Movies for Couples

Melody Monk
Which chick flicks can guys enjoy? They are the ones in which a guy can somehow relate to the male lead. Men generally don't enjoy watching a show where the male lead is emasculated or made to play the fool while the female gloats. If the female gets a good laugh at the male, somewhere in your movie choice the male should get an equally good laugh at the female as well. Guys can handle a movie where the foibles of being human are laughed at, but not where the guys are portrayed as the only stupid ones. These are some of my recommendations:

Pretty Woman, 1990 - Just the fact that Julia Roberts and Richard Gere play the lead roles will be enough for most couples. In addition many men can imagine themselves in the role of a ruthless businessman who needs to hire a female escort for business reasons! Women are drawn to the classic Cinderella tale.

Green Card, 1990 - Another 1990 hit, Gerard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell portray Georges and Bronte. Each has their reasons for entering an arranged marriage. Guys will enjoy the portrayal of Georges, a less than perfect man who is totally unashamed of his imperfections and who lives life to the fullest. Woman will relate to Bronte's reluctance to release some of her inhibitions as she is attracted to someone totally opposite in character and interests.

Sleepless in Seattle, 1993 -Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan play Sam and Annie. Nice guys will be able to identify with Sam, a grounded, responsible widower who lives in Seattle with his son. He's an architect doing the best he can to move on with his life. Most women can relate to the romantic Annie who lives in Baltimore and is touched when she hears Sam's son, Jonah on a radio program. Their final meeting in New York is a take-off from the classic story, An Affair to Remember.

French Kiss, 1995 - Again, tell most guys that Meg Ryan is in the movie and undoubtedly they'll be happy! They will also be able to relate to the rough character, Luc, played by Kevin Kline. Women generally will empathize with Meg's character as she conquers her fear of doing things alone, and rejoice with her as she meets bad-boy Kline to help her through some of the rough spots.

True Lies, 1994 - Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis play married couple Harry and Helen Tasker. Nearly every woman can relate to thinking that their life is boring at some point and the idea of being tempted by adventure and excitement. Most men have no problem envisioning themselves as the pumped-up secret agent who wants to teach his wife a lesson.

The Saint, 1997 - If you like a little espionage with your romance, then you will enjoy Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue as Simon Templar and Dr. Emma Russell. Simon is a spy under orders to steal the formula for cold fusion from Dr. Russell. Guys usually love competent spy movies with an attractive female lead!

Runaway Bride, 1999 - Richard Gere and Julia Roberts play Ike Graham and Maggie Carpenter. Men will not be hesitant to identify with the successful, seasoned Ike, a reporter who is a bit biting in his expose of Maggie Carpenter, a woman who has left more than one prospective groom standing at the altar. Women will understand her hesitancy about tying the knot and the idea that often women become like the man they are dating in an effort to please.
