Huckleberries: Not just yummy for bears

I'm am a huckleberry addict and there is no cure, thank goodness. Where I live huckleberries grow wild. When you live in the mountains 'wild' really means the yard. We are blessed, I think, in that way. To me huckleberries are one of the best summer time treats nature has to offer. I could spend all day sitting on a hillside picking huckleberries, one for the bucket, two for me. My bucket never really gets full, but my hands and mouth turn a wonderful shade of purple. I can't help it, I just love huckleberries!

Here is a short list of my favorite huckleberry treats. I forced myself to narrow it down so I didn't start sounding like Bubba from Forrest Gump.

1.)Fudge: comes out best if the berries are partly de-hydrated
2.)Pie: you can add apples if you don't have enough berries
3.)Cheesecake
4.)Homemade jam or jelly
5.)Syrup: my fave thing is to pour it over frybread
6.)Wine: our local winery makes some that is so good and I don't even like wine.
7.)Lemonade and slushies
8.)Pancakes

If you have never tried huckleberries, you are missing out. If you go huckleberry picking remember to watch out for bears, they love huckleberries too. Huckleberries are delicious and healthy so there is no reason not to try some. One las word of caution: huckleberries are addictive and they turn your fingers purple.
