First Impressions ofHuddle House Oak Island, NC

Once you cross the bridge into Oak Island you will notice a small restaurant to the left of a gas station. There aren't any fancy signs drawing customers into the establishment, just a sign which read Huddle House. This particular restaurant reminded me of a diner from the fifties. Entering, you are greeted by a waitress behind the counter smiling preparing to seat you.

Glancing around you notice the kitchen in front and not hidden. Having the grill out front makes me feel comfortable about my food preparation. The food prep area and cooking are were extremely clean and sanitary. You are constantly witness to the kitchen staff cleaning, even if there weren't any orders being prepared. Being in a party of six, I became nervous regarding the seating arrangements. To my dismay, the booth where we were seated could have easily seated 10 adults with ease.

Wait Staff and Menu at Huddle House Oak Island, NC

Our waitress was the nicest person I have ever seen in a restaurant setting in the 20 plus year I have eaten at restaurants. She made you feel as if you were a child again and your mother was preparing to give you a meal. What impressed me the most was the communication appeared genuine and not forced. Throughout our meal we never had to ask for additional drinks. By the time we were half way through our refreshments, she was half way to our table with more drinks.

Being a first time visitor to Huddle House Oak Island, NC, I did not know what to expect of the pricing. I was shocked at the values I saw on the menu. All items were under $8, except for a dozen chicken wings for $8.79 and three ribeye steak meals which averaged $10. We ordered the Southern Smothered Biscuit Platter with Eggs, Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich meal, a kid's grill cheese meal, a kid's chicken tender meal, a mushroom and Swiss Chop House burger, and a 10oz. Ribeye steak meal. In total our check was roughly $60. This included drinks which were extra and tip. The tip represented 20% of the total bill.

Dinner at Huddle House Oak Island, NC

When the website claims to serve "hearty helpings", the claim is justified. There was no square inch of the plate which was not covered in food. For starters, the ribeye was cooked to perfection. To cut into this piece of meat was similar to putting a hot knife through melted butter. The mushrooms on the mushroom and Swiss burger were grilled and sautéed to capture to hearty taste. The Southern Smothered Biscuit Platter with Eggs was by far the best. The four homemade biscuits were as tender as they were flaky. Then add the gravy and you are in for a treat. The meal was so large; we had to take half of it home.

The Philly Cheese steak sandwich was reminiscent of a traditional cheese steak from Philadelphia. The onions and peppers weren't over cooked. They had more of an al dente texture. The kid's meals were not as greasy as most fast food restaurants.
