According to the New York Times, Chartis insurance company has put the remains of the plane that crashed on the Hudson River, up for auction online. The sale, according to the Times, has attracted "widespread attention." Many people are now using online auctions to sell unique items like these. Do auctions work? Can auctions really attract high paying buyers to purchase in demand goods?
Often, in the media, we hear of ordinary people who stumble upon extraordinary items such as ancient manuscripts and objects that cause much attention and media circulation. They often provide these items for sale on auction sites, like eBay or Amazon. This can be a great way for individuals to promote their items on a global scale, attracting people from, all over, who have access to the Internet.
As much attraction as people get for items with publicity around them, we may wonder. Do these items ever sell? When many people promote these items and put them up for sale, they hope to see the results of what their publicity shows. However, when the attraction has subdued, many find that their prospects are very few. Many of their "bidders" end up declining their offers and no longer become interested in them.
Many online sellers wonder if auctioning their items is the best way to promote their goods. They often fear last minute bid retractions and late payments from sellers. This requires them to potentially loose money on their auction listings and lose valuable time spent promoting and listing their auctions. People seek alternative ways to sell their items such as direct purchasing or installed payments, which may not attract as much attention as auctions do.
Nevertheless, as seen in the Hudson plane sale, online auctioning can be a great way to promote a business item or quickly get rid of unwanted items. It allows buyers the power to choose their price and it also offers the seller the ability to get the optimum worth out of his goods. With the many risks associated with auctions many people, on the other hand, choose to find alternative ways of selling their items. Still, whatever is meant to be said about the practicality of auctions, it still remains one of the top ways to gain instant publicity for items.
