Hug a Hero Dolls for Kids Who Miss Mommy or Daddy

U. S. Marine Wives Invent the Daddy Doll

Theresa Wiza
Separation for any reason is difficult for children, whether because of military service or through divorce. The loss of a parent, even if only temporary, is particularly traumatic for children who can't understand why mommy or daddy left them.

Two Marine wives, Tricia Dyal and Nikki Darnell, became acutely aware of just how much their children missed their daddies every time their husbands were deployed, so they invented the Daddy Doll to comfort their children in Daddy's absence.

As the company grew, Nikki and Tricia realized they needed to offer more than just Daddy Dolls. They now have Hug A Hero Dolls to help children hold Mom, Grandma, Grandpa, aunts, uncles, or anyone the child loves and misses.

I heard about these dolls when my granddaughter, Sarah, bought one for her daughter. The photo above shows my great-granddaughter, Ayla, holding Andrew, her Daddy Doll. Her daddy is a United States Marine and when Daddy is away, Ayla wraps her arms around her daddy and hugs him every night when she goes to bed.

These dolls come in a variety of sizes from 12 and 17 inches tall to 3 feet tall, and they are created from photos of their heroes standing with arms held down by their sides.

To see other photos of children holding their dolls, visit the Daddy Dolls Gallery. The Hug A Hero company (Daddy Dolls, Inc.) also offers voice recorders to place in the dolls, as well as pillows, dog tags, mugs, and other items.

Ayla's Daddy Doll accompanies her to bed at night and in the car on long trips. As you might guess, her Daddy Doll is her most loved and treasured doll.

I just love these! I wrote about them a very long time ago after seeing a little girl with a doll of her daddy. When we lived in NC, we lived in a military town and they were VERY popular.

This is a wonderful idea. My husband was an over-the-road trucker for many years and our daughter would have loved this.
