Huge Snow Storm Takes Over D.C Metro Area!

Carlena Doggett
A huge snow storm is taking over the Washington D.C area. It's been snowing since Friday morning and it's not scheduled to stop snowing until 10pm tonight. The local weather service has issued a blizzard waring for Washington D.C and the surrounding areas. It's estimated that once all of the snow is finished the total accumulations are expected to be anywhere between 24 and 28 inches with some areas having more than that.

I currently live in Suitland, Maryland, which is about literally 5 minutes from Southeast D.C and it's beautiful! There's snow everywhere and it just looks like a white blanket all over the city. I haven't left my house all weekend and do not plan to. The streets are covered with snow. No snow plows have come through my neighborhood just yet so besides the few footprints in the snow the streets just look like it's a ghost town. I haven't seen a car pass down my street since Friday. Any neighbors of mine that have left their houses all did so on foot.

My family left the house this morning to hike over to my grandmother's house in Temple Hills MD. It's about a 15-20 minute walk and I can only imagine how long it took in the snow. My little brother is 11 years old and when he went outside the snow came up to his little knees. I have a little 5 pound Yorke and when I let him out to do his business last night he walked down the steps and fell completely in the snow! It covered his whole body. He quickly ran back up the stairs and did his business on the steps. There's literally nowhere for him to walk out there.

While it's still snowing here, things will hopefully start to get a little better as the day goes on but I'm not sure what to expect at this point. There are high winds blowing snow everywhere and the heavy snow on top of trees is causing them to fall on top of apartment buildings and cars. The heavy snow and winds are limiting visibility for those who are managing to make it onto the roads to drive. The mayor and president Obama are urging people to stay indoors unless of an emergency because the risks are too great.

At this point there are thousands in the metro area without power. Heavy snow on the power lines are the cause of this. The postal service has also shut down service and is not delivering or retrieving mail today. The Metro has also suspended services for today as well. Hospitals in the area are requesting volunteers with 4WD vehicles to transport hospital workers to work who can't get there themselves.

The storm is really impacting the area in many different ways. Luckily my power is still on, I haven't left the house so I've avoided getting stuck anywhere. My plans are to just stay indoors with my dog, watch t.v, eat, and try to do things to keep from being bored.
