Hugh Jackman hosted the 81st Academy Awards Ceremony and produced a giggly opening number despite a low budget to produce it. He let loose his funny bone as he sang with the assisting Anne Hathaway. It was a refreshing change from the normal machine generated jokes.
The First Oscar of the night went to Penelope Cruz for her supporting actress role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Following her was the award for original Screenplay, which went to the film "Milk"
Simon Beaufoy received the award on behalf of Slumdog Millionaire for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Jack Black as always drew attention with his quirky humor. Aniston was proper and then melted into dramatic consultation of her presenting friend. They both made a first-class introductory pair.
They both presented the winning nomination of Best Animation to the film "WALL-E."
"La Maison en Petits Cube" won the honor for short animated film.
Best Art Direction went to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
Michael O'Connor took up the award for Best Costume Design in the movie "The Duchess"
Many winners were thanking their parents. Therein showed humility amidst the winners when receiving the awards and thanking their numerous in gratitude.
Best Makeup went to Greg Cannom for his work in "The Curious case of Benjamin Button"
Anthony Dod Mantle seized the Best Cinematography award for his eye-catching effort in "Slumdog Millionaire"
Ben Stiller was so hilarious in his obvious attempt to poke fun at a recent well-known target. It was all sweet and in good fun and just short of slapstick comedy.
Best Live Action Short Film win was awarded to "Spielzeugland (Toyland)".
A second collage of music from the movie Australia was entertaining and surprising as Beyonce Knowles took a leading role in the short Broadwayesque production. Contributing actors were High School Musical stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.
The award for supporting actor was awarded to Heath Ledger for his role in the film "The Dark Knight." Receiving his posthumous award were members of his immediate family in solemn occasion. The eulogistic gratitude was heartfelt slightly tear jerky and unifying in compassion.
Best Documentary was awarded to James Marsh and Simon Chinn for "Man on Wire."
Best Documentary - Short Subject went to "Smile Pinki." It was inspiring to witness a documentary on cleft palate operations for babies win an Oscar. So sure seemed the nomination for the film about Martin Luther King Jr's assassination, what with the history-changing election. Yet, this year, this time proved movie production skills won over thematic content and agenda.
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" won for Best Visual Effects.
Richard King took the honor for Best Sound Editing in "The Dark Knight."
Slumdog Millionaire grabbed the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing. From politically impoverished India he expressed deep thanks in the ability to express his voice freely in the form of sound mixing.
Chris Dickens received the honor for Best Film Editing in "Slumdog Millionaire."
The Jean Hersholt Award went to the much deserving Jerry Lewis. So hopeful and refreshing was it to see an aged, but able-bodied Mr. Lewis receive the award in good spirits.
Beautiful medley of movie scores different selected nominated films was a delightfully added break of the night.
A.R. Rahman's music won for Best Original Score and Best Original Song "Jai Ho" for the movie "Slumdog Millionaire."
Best Foreign Language Film was awarded to "Departures" from Japan.
Queen Latifah sang as elegantly as she was dressed in her electric blue gown while she serenaded the 2008 passing of beloved film greats.
Reese Witherspoon humorously presented the winning award for Best Directing to Danny Boyle for his work in "Slumdog Millionaire."
As Kate Winslet thanked the plethora of film crew and family for her win as Best Actress in "The Reader," she told of how in her youth. She used to thank her bathroom mirror holding up a bottle of shampoo. Her father whistled to her that he was present and witnessing the auspicious occasion. She honored Meryl Streep as a mentor and a forerunner of nominees and winning actresses.
Best Actor went to Sean Penn for his role in "Milk." The winning actor Held up his thank everyone scribble sheet and read off names. The speech turned into a politically correct sermon on the ill support of Proposition 8.
The crowning jewel of the night was definitely a rags-to-riches story. "Slumdog Millionaire" stole the hearts of the Academy and placed the film upon a golden figured pedestal as it won for Best Picture of 2008!
