Hughes Creek Golf Course, Elburn Illinois - a Review

Brad Kamer
Out in the far reaches of Kane County is the expansive Hughes Creek Golf Course. Hughes creek was designed by Gordon Cunningham back in 1992 and is situated on what used to be rolling farm land that slopes out in all different directions. The club house and first tee box are perched high up on a hill overlooking much of the valley and golf course. I have had the pleasure of playing this course over the past seventeen years and have learned to like the course as well as cope with the displeasures found at Hughes Creek.

Hughes Creek Golf Course - The Course

The fairways are laid out fairly easy with several being side by side. The fact that I am an occasional slicer allowed me to play a shot from the neighboring hole. This luck however does not play out too well with those holes that feature beautiful water hazards and wildlife sanctuaries. The course is extremely sloped and reminded me of courses I have played up in Michigan and Wisconsin. Illinois is laden with flat courses so this course plays as a treat once in a while.

The greens typically run pretty darn fast. The bent grass greens can make or break your game depending on your easy putting stroke. Most greens are surrounded by sand traps that could usually use a good raking as they are usually patted down.

Hughes Creek Golf Course - The Price

The cost of play at Hughes Creek is relatively inexpensive in comparison to other courses in the neighborhood. Those that live in Kane County can opt for a one time purchase of resident discount card for $10 which will knock off a few b bucks every time you play. A round of golf for non-resident with cart will set you back about $60. The course offers nine hole play during the weekdays only. Cheaper rates apply when teeing off after 2 pm on weekends, though be weary of these late tee times as the starter will compress as many groups as possible to allow for very slow play. I find it worth paying the extra money and playing as early in the day as possible.

Hughes Creek Golf Course - The Service

The overall demeanor of the staff is cordial. I have never had any issues being treated rudely or unfairly. I would say that the afternoon rounds seem to lack patrolling by the course ranger. Whenever we play this course in the afternoon, it is usually backed up big time with a course ranger nowhere in sight. I have had to call the pro shop from my cell phone on the course to get a ranger out on the fairways to speed up play.

The course restaurant and counter staff is always good to our group. We usually stop for a quick bite and drink at the turn and are back in our carts due to speedy service. Make use of the restaurant counter as the beverage cart will be absent many days it is insanely hot and humid.
