Hughes, Whitman, and Me

American Harmony (after Four Cups of Coffee)

bw Frampton
Fourth cup of coffee past midnight.
Twenty minutes ago since the bells rang thrice
and my hands growing tight; eyes bring fright with
each phantom movement this early Sunday morn.

Lil' darling daughter fas'leep on the chair while
the 'ines' - can and fel - drowse without a single care, each with
one eye open. My mind on two fathers
of the craft I once loved and so longed to share.

The Mistress - she without a face to see - says, "Bring
their work to reality." All at once, majik gone -
analyzing meaning from two Masters long gone. Two
who have taken their intentions six feet below ground.

"Find their vision of what America should be.
Compare or contrast - do not deceive me by diving
into the pools of research. Let me hear your own words
and tell me, unseen Pupil, the message you recieve."

American harmony found
after four cups of coffee
when I should be sleeping, sound.
