If you haven't heard by now, Hulk Hogan has joined TNA Wrestling. It was announced last week at a big press conference at Madison Square Garden. Hogan and his long-time associate, Eric Bischoff, announced that would be joining the company and that Hogan would be heading up the booking team
Well that's all fine and well, except for one little problem. Vince Russo. The two have not gotten along over the years, dating back to the WCW/n.W.o. days. Hogan says he will try to maintain a professional working relationship with Russo, but I think we all know it's just a matter of time before Russo gets shoved out the door.
All in all, I'm not a Vince Russo supporter. I haven't been for a long time. So seeing him leave wouldn't exactly cause me any restless nights. However, anybody that knows me will tell you I've never been "Hulkamaniac" either. Sorry to burst your bubbles boys, but I grew up on guys like Randy Savage, The Four Horsemen, Freebirds, Von Erichs, guys that had legit talent.
I've been in this business for almost 10 years. Last I checked, this was still professional wrestling. But you also remember that in the 1980s, it didn't really matter if you had talent to get onto the mainstage of the then-WWF. If you weren't a legit 6'5" and weight at least 280, chances are you weren't going very far.
Now thankfully, the opportunities have opened up a little for the younger, smaller guys. But it will always be guys like Hogan that buries the younger talent. Hogan wants to bring in guys like The Nasty Boys, and a lot of his old circle of friends. Essentially kill off any real push the TNA guys might have.
It's evident that Hogan & Bischoff want to recreate the Monday Night Wars with TNA apparently getting a Monday night show that could run head-to-head with WWE's "Monday Night Raw" on USA. Well here's a newsflash for anybody who remembers the original Monday Night Wars: IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!
It doesn't matter how you put it together, there is no way possible to recreate 1996. That was a special time period. You had the right guys, the right creative direction, everything about it was just right.
That's what I fear we're going to see in the coming weeks. Somehow they're going try to convince us all that history can repeat itself. Yet we all know that it will never happen. Strap in boys and girls, the next few months are going to be really interesting!
