Hulon believes in good First Impressions and does he ever get off on the right foot with his maiden solo voyage with the same title.
This album put me in a great mood; it allowed me to focus on how good one can feel when you listen to the right music. There is something about instrumental jazz with a funky smooth groove that takes me there every time.
From the start with a familiar War tune and their big hit "The Cisco Kid", to the smooth contemporary sounds of "Cool Blue", Hulon and his band have it down, straight up. It helps to have players like Jeff Kishiwa (keys) to back you and many other talents of note, but you have to be good enough to enjoy such exclusive company and Hulon falls into that category with relative ease.
Hulon's sax playing is spot on proficient, razor sharp, and his command brings along everyone else behind him right on cue. The difficulty in presenting a jazz instrumental album is that people are bound to be more critical because there are no vocals to divert their attention; it's all music, which can open a literal Pandora 's Box that any musician would loathe. You can trust me on this one; there are no issues of concern here. The music is on firm ground, it sounds terrific with plenty of jazz sub genres mixed in to keep it totally interesting and the production is as clean as a whistle. In other words, this an outstanding jazz recording and a fine debut that any artist would love to have.
First Impressions is highly recommended to jazz lovers of any kind, instrumental listeners, again of any kind, and those that can appreciate contemporary jazz sprinkled with just enough funk to get your groove thang on. I loved it. Simply put, what's not to like here?
