Human, the Evil Animal Waiting to Be Unleashed!

Deez
Do you have a dark place in your heart? Does that evil thought seep into your consciousness? Have you done something that you keep a secret. Something you know that if others knew, you would be ostracized from your peer group? Have you done something that is morally unacceptable? When I say you, I mean you there sitting reading this in your underwear or you sipping on a Mocha Latte at Star bucks or you there with the kids screaming in the background or even you the woman who is going through a bitter divorce. Have any of you committed a crime or had a truly malevolent thought?

Maybe you haven't been caught or maybe you just had a thought or an impulse to do something culturally unacceptable or criminal in nature. I think if you, the reader, were to be totally honest with me you would say, yes I have, each one of you without exception. Even those people we like to place upon a pedestal have had evil thoughts and they definitely have committed some of the most heinous crimes imaginable. With all the aforementioned questions and statements self evident, I have come to the conclusion, this evil is a universal dilemma inherent in human nature.

Don't believe me? Well, if you read the newspapers or watch the BOOB TUBE you will see examples of this malicious human condition being illuminated. For every article and every broadcast, that brings to light another human being that got caught with their proverbial hand in the "Evil Cookie Jar", there are millions more people that haven't been caught in the "Evil Doers Spot Light." Some will never be caught in the act, some will only have the thought and never act upon it. However, just having the malevolent thought with no action still proves that Homo sapiens are intrinsically evil.

I'm sure some of you reading this will be in denial and say something to the effect, this is pure BS...what about all the good that humans do. Sure, that's what is culturally fed to us with the "Silver Spoon of Righteousness", do good deeds, be honest, show respect, be honorable. Even these respectable precepts can be and have been twisted to fill our desire to do evil. Look at the atrocities we have perpetrated on one another in the name of religion, honor, and love.

Still doubt me? O.K., then ask yourself some of these questions and then answer yourself with complete honesty. If there were no moral constructs, no laws, no social mores or norms and you wouldn't be punished for doing what ever you wanted, what would you do? Would you kill you partner for cheating? Would you beat your kid if he pissed you off? Would you take something from another if you desired that object? Would you rape someone you found attractive? Would you shoot someone for cutting you off in traffic? Would you go to work to earn a living or would you just take what ever the hell you needed to get by? I know what some of you might be thinking, gee whiz...not me, but stop and think about it. I know each and everyone of you have had these thoughts pass through your mind from time to time. According to some religions just having thoughts of this nature is a sin. The thought or the act, each in there own way, is a means to a particular end. Some have the courage to act and some have the courage not to act, but aren't they both evil?

I think the only thing that saves us is are social nature. We need the love and admiration of others, and the acceptance of our peers. In order to facilitate this need for company we have invented many social norms, mores and a system of morality as a guide for living together. Even with all of these self made constructs that the human race has invented to adhere us one to another, there still lurks the evil animal within each of us, waiting to be unleashed.

Yes - I've heard this thinking before - many times. And where I've heard it most is from prisoners and prison officers.
I'm not sure I completely agree with this view either. Though on more than one occasion I've told a prisoner, "if i caught you doing that to my daughter I would have killed you on the spot" - to which they usually reply, "I wudda killed me too".
Do unto others as you would do unto yourself is a pretty good edict.
I don't believe humans are intrinsically evil; I believe they are intrinsically social. And that social equality and eradication of poverty would solve all crime.
If we don't want crime then I believe we all have a responsibility to help create a society where crime cannot and doesn't need to exist.
Deez - I believe you are a 'catcher' - and a 'good moral citizen' who exercises and enforces moral judgments.
Crime is the end result of all of our planets' collective 'existential shadow'.
I reckon we all have a great deal to answer for - and not only

Great article. I agree with you almost 100%. I have 3.5 kids. You know what the first thing every single toddler does when they see an animal? Hit it with something. See a bug? Kill it. We are intelligent yes but in our hearts rages a murderous animal. Maybe not so much in women but men can feel it.

Oh, all you bible thumpers explain this to me.

"And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight. And the LORD said, Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles, whither I will drive them." (Ezekiel 4:12-13)

This is the "God" you worship? He makes people eat poopcakes? What the hell? Enjoy your heaven and eat a poopcake for me. LOL.

As a Christian I experience 'flight or fight' impulses -fear- from that lower brain when faced with a shocking or scary situation. I speak only for myself but have heard this basic thought/urge is inherent in all human beings; it's a survival impulse we need in certain situations but must temper for daily life. God implanted the 'inner man' or conscience. I tend to wrestle between the two but find it is the ultimate test necessary to develop my patience and faith in Jesus. It has become a working part of my mind. The two commandments Jesus gave in Matt. 22:36-40 are the perfect summation of the 10 commandments. Love overcomes all. For me being saved was an Event. My daily life 'ain't all easy' but it is an ongoing process.

And.. in answer to your takeaway questions. No. No, and no. Not that I am a terrific person, but my faith tells me that all of these things are wrong. I believe that we pay in one form or another for everything that we do. It isn't worth it to me.

Deez, I think that conscience is the secret. We inherently "know" what is right and what is wrong. I think you are right. I believe that we all have those "what if" moments, and the strength of our convictions is what saves us from being savages.

Thanks for all the comments folks.

We all fight the good and evil within ourselves every day. The Bible talks about it in many places. But for the majority of us, thankfully our desire to do good wins over the "evil".
