Human Medications You Can Give Your Dog

When Your Puppy Pal is Sick, Some Human Medication Might Do the Trick

Megan Ally
We love our dogs almost as much as we love our children, and in some cases they practically are our children. It stinks when your dog is sick and you feel like there's nothing you can do for them. Some household medications that you use can actually help your dog too. My dog's vet told me about some human medications that you can give your dog. I'll share a few of the most useful medications with you.

Problem:

Allergies, itching

Solution:

Benadryl- You can give Benadryl to your dog to help relieve itching or allergies. Give them ½ mg per pound. This means if you have a 50 lb dog you will give it 25 mg of Benadryl. You can repeat the dose every eight hours.

Problem:

Motion sickness

Solution:

Dramamine- You can give this medication to your dog if he or she experiences motion sickness. This can be especially helpful for car rides. You can give them up to 50 mg every eight hours.

Problem:

Diarrhea, gas

Solution:

Pepto Bismol- Basically, if your dog has "nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea" then you can help them out by giving them Pepto. You can give them 1 teaspoon per every 5 lbs. This means if you have a 50 lb dog, you would give them 10 teaspoons. You can repeat the dose every six hours.

Kaopectate- This medication will also help relieve diarrhea. You can give them 1 mg per every pound. For example, if your dog weighs 50 lbs you can give them 50 mg. You can repeat the dose every two hours.

Problem:

Constipation

Solution:

Mineral Oil- If your dog is constipated, you can give them mineral oil. You can give them up to 4 tablespoons each day.

Problem:

Pain

Solution:

Buffered aspirin- If your dog has pain or inflammation, you can give him or her buffered aspirin. You can give them 5 mg per pound. For example, if you have a 50 lb dog you can give them 250 mg. The dose may be repeated every 12 hours if needed.

My family has owned multiple dogs over the years, and we have used most of these human medications on them. These medications can be a lifesaver if your dog is sick but not sick enough to go to the vet, or if the vet's office isn't open. If you have any questions about these or any other human medications you can give your dog, contact your veterinarian. I hope you and your pooch have a wonderful day!
