Humanitarian Bowl Shocking Ending: Idaho Goes for Two with 4 Seconds Left to Beat Bowling Green

Gutsy Call to Go for the 2 Point Conversion Leads to Idaho Victory Over Bowling Green

Looking on the schedule of bowl games for the evening, everyone was focused on the Holiday Bowl between Arizona and Nebraska. However, the Humanitarian Bowl between the Idaho Vandals and the Bowling Green Falcons had more drama then you ever could have imagined.

It was a high scoring, back and forth game played out on the blue turf of Boise State. As such, the Vandals had a huge home field advantage although it took them until the last 30 seconds of the game to really enjoy it. With their backs against the wall and with the team headed towards a loss, Idaho drove the field in less than 30 seconds. Shockingly they then pulled the trigger on a two point conversion with 4 seconds left on the clock to win the game by 1 point, 43-42. The extra point of course would have safely tied the game had they gone for it, but instead the Vandals put it all on the line and went for the two pointer.

Prior to the crazy two point conversion to end the game, it looked like Freddie Barnes of Bowling Green University was the hero. In his last college football game, he had 17 receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns. The third touchdown was a huge 51 yard grab that gave Bowling Green a 7 point lead with just over 30 seconds remaining on the clock.

With the score 42-35 in favor of Bowling Green, the game looked to be all but over. However, the Idaho Vandals were not about to give up, not on the blue turf and not after a once promising season ended with so much struggle. Quarterback Nathan Enderle threw a 50 yard bomb to receiver Preston Davis, who finished with 4 receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Enderle then passed to Max Komar for what appeared to be the tying touchdown. But the Vandals weren't satisfied taking it into overtime, they wanted to win the game in regulation. So they went for the 2 point conversion and took home the game, 43-42. Enderle hooked up with Davis once again, and with that the crowd erupted and the Vandals began celebrating their Humanitarian Bowl victory. With just 4 seconds left on the clock, this time the game was over for good.

For the Idaho Vandals, the Humanitarian Bowl was a great way to finish off and redeem a season that had a good deal of ups and downs. For Bowling Green, it's a stunning defeat when the game seemed won, and it will surely take some time to get over. However, the Falcons have nothing to be ashamed of, and the Humanitarian Bowl between Idaho and Bowling Green will be remembered for quite some time.

On the day before New Year's Eve, the Humanitarian Bowl officially ushered in the true bowl season. All of the big BCS bowls are to come, and this is a great game that will be looked back on for years. This kind of magic in the Humanitarian Bowl between Idaho and Bowling Green is what the bowls are all about. Still, one would think you could keep these vibes and still install a playoff system that would enable a true champion to be crowned. Who knows, coming off this kind of huge victory, Idaho may have even been able to make a run.
