We are advised to live by American values. I don't know what these are and definitely don't want to live by some contrived morality. I was prepared for a much more ecumenical world. I practice catholicity without a god. The segregated thinkers, the 21st century jingoists and the ever present righteous keeps selling the same stale lies. I require no counsel concerning my humanity. All you can hope for is to be good and maybe a little wise.
Go to Washington once too often and find yourself faced with a McCarthy, some tanks and a lot of unfriendly guys. That's the bonus you can expect. The slave riot never happened, the aboriginals hit the bricks (follow the tears) and you've sold your birthright, your dreams, your soul for some sort of deferred compensation. It's not enough to sell a lie just because you know there's a taker. We are becoming a nation of haters.
Lay your head down on hard wood, listen to the voice that used to be your conscience. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Point your finger no farther than I. It's not enough to repent or even be forgiven. We must do better.
