Humanity's description of God is essentially composed of all the elements one would try to avoid in a mate, and at all costs. Based on our theory of God, God is insecure, vindictive, kind only to those who obey Its every whim, all knowing, capable of ruining a person's life, and other endearing characteristics. And when you get down to brass tacks, our vision of God is one that is bound to subconsciously give God credit for everything happening in the world and our lives, small or big, good or bad. The whole, "Don't take the Lord's name in vein," hullabaloo that comes when pairing "God" and an expletive of one's choosing is such a dunderheaded reprimand that every time it's muttered, chills shoot up my spine. If the almighty can't handle the name we made up for It, coupled with another word we created then goddamn, we are screwed!
Aside from the manmade insecurity that God is well known for, there is the other unpleasant character trait that is often possessed by a spoiled rotten child. If things happen to be going a different way than God had hoped for, it is not uncommon for God to throw a temper tantrum, usually one involving some form of horrendous natural disaster. Then again, we also feel that God is responsible for our existence, the beautiful planet on which we live, and any other tangible element in our reality. Which is quite funny considering that not more than two sentences ago, we explored God's temper tantrums that result from Its "project/experiment" not turning out the way It had hoped. Now if God was all knowing and able to create EVERYTHING in the universe, don't you think things would always go Its way? Additionally, what would God need hope for? Both will only provide frightening answers so let's move on quickly, before our brains start to think.
Two paragraphs in and it is already apparent that we (humans) can't possibly know anything about God-and that's if It even exists! Our own theory on God is riddled with contradictions and beliefs that subliminally condition us to fear God, but at the same time love God. In fact, in order to be able to love what we are socially taught to fear, we had to create another God. One that could bear the blame for everything evil and miserable in the world; a scapegoat who lives in the underworld named SATAN!!! AHHHHH!! Far more of a creep than the bogeyman and a Hell of a lot more merciless than Hannibal Lector. It comes as no surprise that Bi-Polar disorder is afflicting more and more people each year. The centuries of sculpting a God (and Devil) in man's own image have finally started to catch up with us.
We have given God all the lesser qualities of ourselves, maybe not intentionally, but the God humanity has created is one that I personally would not want to worship by any means. There is a greater force out there, but it is far beyond the means of comprehension by humans. Nevertheless, even with that knowledge drilled into our minds we will still wonder, still theorize, and still create a character we can't possibly know a thing about. It would be safe to bet that if one hundred different people were asked to describe God they would give one hundred different descriptions, all of which giving God that horribly flawed yet endearing quality we have come to lov...fea...respect. For respect is the bastard child of love and fear.

Again Nick, I have a real problem with people using God as a means for gaining authority/power, and that is incredibly prevalent throughout the history. Many of the worst tyrants used God as a means to create obedience.
Okay this is a very nicely written article which even made me have to chuckle a little. I can understand why people feel this way about God. We do not like to think that we are accountable to anyone for what we do and how we act, so some tend to rebel against authority. Throughout the Bible the underlying point that God is trying to make is that he wants everyone to believe in him, respect him, and of course give him some credit for creating everything. As humans we tend to look at things on the face of it. We fail to take into account the mitigating factors which led to the harsh judgments. Great writing, of course, I cannot agree with you, but I understand where you are coming from.
Nice job. It amazes me how impossible it is for humanity to admit that they cannot know. All cultures since the beginning of recorded time have attempted to explain what is transcendant... which is fine when it is understood as poetic imagery and symbolism. When one version is asserted as truth and is used to persecute, condemn, and attempt to destroy all others it becomes a dangerous cult (organized religion).
interesting article. i agree with, well, just about none of it...but it doesnt mean the article sucks. good job.
