Humidifiers Are Essential During Winter Months

Eric Loveday
Aside from the cold weather that comes in as the winter months stroll in, one other major change takes place across most of the nation. The air turns from damp and humid during the summer and fall to dry in the winter. The dry winter air has a negative impact on many different things. Adding a humidifier to your existing furnace can greatly rude the negative effects associated with dry winter air.

Before we move on to adding a humidifier to your house, first let's discuss the negative effects of dry air. There are several and they can be grouped into two categories. The categories are how the dry air affects you and how the dry air affects your home.

Dry air affects people in many ways. Dry air can lead to dry skin, itchy skin, and respiratory problems. The dry air will literally suck the moisture out of your skin and into the air leading to dry, chapped hands, lips, feet and so on. Dry skin is irritating. as you skin dries it can become itchy. This itchiness can lead to cracked skin, bleeding, and general discomfort. Th dry air can also cause respiratory problems such as dry mouth and sinus issue.

Though the dry winter air affect people, it also affects your home. The dry air can lead to cracked wood furniture, gaps in hardwood floor, caulk joints that separate, high levels of static electricity, and shrinkage of building materials.

Most of the problems associated with the dry winter air can be easily cured by installing a whole house furnace mounted humidifier. This unit attaches to the side of your furnace and introduces water into the air as needed. It works by passing water through a grid which is in the path of airflow to your house. The moving air picks up the water content and evenly distributes it throughout your home. An effective whole house humidifier can reduce or even eliminate all of the issues addressed above.

Installation of a whole house humidifier is straight forward, but should probably be left to the professionals as it required plumbing water lines, cutting into ductwork, electrical wiring for the humidistat and other difficult steps. A whole house humidifier will run a few hundred dollars plus a couple hundred for installation, but the increased comfort level within your home is well worth it. Furthermore, a whole house humidifier requires very little maintenance and no refilling as room humidifiers require. A whole house humidifier is much more efficient than in room humidifiers, is easier to maintain, requires no fill ups, does not have mold issues and is more effective at increasing humidity than other types of humidifiers.

So this winter as the air dries out in your home and you begin to experience the problems listed above, consider a whole house furnace mounted humidifier as the solution to all of the problems. It's effective, simple to use, and efficient.
