Have you ever wanted people to laugh at you? Really laugh, and perhaps point? Being funny is a lot simpler than many people think. It is easier than, say, being witty which requires smarts. But just like an average person can learn tricks to sound smart, a person can also learn to sound funny. Follow the seven simple steps below.
1) Instead of jokes, tell funny stories. You can change most jokes into funny stories by inserting yourself into the action. A joke might start with "knock, knock," whereas a funny story would start with, "So the other day I was knocking on a door when a duck said 'Who's there?' and I was like 'Whoa! A talking duck!'"
2) If you must tell a joke, you should know that there will always be someone there who has heard it already. So always start your jokes by saying, "Try and stop me if you've heard this one."
3) Many humor writers say to use something called misdirection. Misdirection is supposed to be a fundamental building block of humor. If that were really true than being lost would be a laugh riot. But, being being lost is actually kind of scary and sad. I say avoid misdirection.
4) The double e sound or 'ee' is the funniest of all the vowel sounds. Some have theorized that pronouncing double e's tends to put your mouth into a smile shape. A weasel going into a saloon will always be funnier than an otter going into a saloon, even if it is the same saloon. O tters in real life have a terrific sense of humor, but the 'ee' sound makes weasel a funnier animal to talk about. Hard 'k' sounds are funny too. That's why ducks are funny. (See point 1). Name your weasel Kevin. Name your duck Steve.
5) Making fun of other people is not nice. If you must make fun of someone, make fun of your wife. Or your kids. This gives your audience permission to despise you, which will put them in a good mood.
6) Never try to use irony. It is way too difficult. I mean, what even is it? One song told of a man who was afraid to fly and then overcame his fear only to die in a crash on his first airplane trip. Was that ironic? Maybe. However, if the man was afraid to fly and so instead was riding a bike and then an airplane crashed right on him and the pilot turned out to be a therapist who helped people overcome fears, then that would definitely be ironic. And if the co-pilot was a weasel that would be funny.
7) Just saying that you laughed at something does not induce others to laugh at it too if it is really not that funny. This is what people do when they text 'lol'. A text is either funny or it isn't. If it isn't, then writing lol will not make it so. If it is funny than people will be 'lol'ing without having to be told.
So go to that party now. And I changed my mind; you should still probably reach for that toothpaste. LOL.
