Humor on the Web: My Top Five Favorite Webcomics

Rushelle O'Shea
Web Comics are a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm always getting distracted from my work because I'll stumble across one and, before I know it, I've wasted an hour reading back through old comics or following links to other web comic sites. Yes, yes... I can be a web comic addict from time to time. Remember, though - they do say that laughter is the best medicine!

While I do enjoy reading quite a few different web comics, there are five particular gems that really stand out when I try to think of a list of top webcomic websites. Some of these, you may have heard of and others may be more obscure, but they are sure to tickle the funny-bone and have you laughing in no time.

Five Outstanding Webcomics (in no particular order)

1. Adventures of Blanc: www.backbreaker.com/~smudge/WoWBlanc/

Created by Christina "Smudge" Hanson, "Adventures of Blanc" is one of my favorite WoW webcomics, because the artist keeps it simple yet hits upon crazy antics that will keep any World of Warcraft fan giggling. The animation is cutesy, yet high quality, and the banter is witty. Overall, the various topics are something that any WoW gamer can relate to - getting stuck and needing GM assistance, the life of a tank, and the infamous after-death jog of shame. According to the website, Smudge is currently unemployed, but we can't imagine she will be for long. Her work is definitely top-notch.

2. The Daily Donut: http://www.webdonuts.com/

I admit it... I love donuts and I love these bite-sized cartoons, created by the talented Mike Gruhn. Oddly enough, his website says that "After years of being surrounded by the desert heat and unusual friends, he developed a unique sense of humor." I totally get this stuff (and love it), so it's really had me questioning the Florida heat and my lack of friends. Hmm... no desert. No friends. Are you SURE that's a valid excuse for your sense of humor, Gruhn? Maybe I need to work on my excuses then...

3. Contemplating Reiko: http://www.taintedink.com/

Created by the talented Vincent Grisanti, Contemplating Reiko is a twistedly amusing one-panel comic strip about an adorable, yet very wicked little demon girl named Reiko, and her wicked little family. Whether I read the comic or watch the animations, I am always drawn right in by Reiko's cute little personality - she's so wicked that she's utterly irresistible.

4. Little Gamers: http://www.little-gamers.com/

Contrary to popular belief, this is not one of those sites that focuses solely on the latest World of Warcraft comedy or pokes fun at those (of us) who are still stuck on EQ1. No, with Little Gamers, NO ONE is safe and NOTHING is sacred! Okay, well, maybe some things are, but they poke fun at the latest iPhones and the war overseas and picking up chicks and... just about everything. The animation is fairly simple but nicely done and the wit is sharp as a sharpened tack. Definitely worthy of any top five list!

5. Foamy the Squirrel/Neurotically Yours: http://www.illwillpress.com

Sorry guys, but I am loyal to the Foamster (and in fear of incurring his squirrelly wrath). If you haven't seen a Foamy the Squirrel cartoon/comic/video/whatever, I'm pretty sure I should congratulate you for being released from under the rock that you've been hiding under or else buy you some more Fixodent for your dentures. Foamy the Squirrel, created by Johnathan Ian Mathers, has been around for several years now and still amazes me to this day. I love the biting sarcasm, the quick wit and, yes Germaine... even the character development. This is a brilliant web comic and a true must-see.
