In Charlotte, N.C., hundreds of people lined up early Thursday morning at The Park, hoping to get help with affording their home mortgages. The line actually started forming Wednesday evening as dozens of people camped out all night to be the first ones helped by the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America.

According to its website, NACA is a non-profit, community advocacy and home ownership organization whose "primary goal is to build strong, healthy neighborhoods in urban and rural areas nationwide." The organization achieves this goal through affordable homeownership for its members and assisting with the prevention of foreclosure.

One of NACA's primary activities is putting together "Save the Dream" tours all across the United States. The purpose of this tour is to-over the course of several days-help thousands of homeowners modify their home loans. This week, the event will be held in Charlotte, NC, from Thursday, December 3, to Monday, December 7, at The Park (formerly the Charlotte Merchandise Mart) in East Charlotte. The event will be held from 9 am to 8 pm, daily.

According to NACA, the historic Save the Dream Tour has been an incredible success with over 350,000 participants in eleven cities. Charlotte is the 12th stop on the Save the Dream Tour. Thousands of homeowners across the country have received solutions to their mortgage troubles on the same day they attended the event, and those attending in Charlotte are hoping to see the same results.

During the event, NACA works with many major lenders and mortgage servicers to permanently reduce a borrower's mortgage payments, through a combination of interest rate and/or principal reductions. Two of NACA's largest partners are Bank of America Corporation and Citigroup Corporation. All of NACA's services are free to the public.

According to RealtyTrac, a foreclosure listing and tracking service, one in every 95,006 housing units in Charlotte, North Carolina, received a foreclosure filing in October 2009. Homeowners who attend the Save the Dream event are hoping to avoid continuing this disturbing trend.

North Carolina's unemployment rate in September hit 10.8 percent.

In addition to the Save the Dream tour, in which home mortgages are modified, NACA also offers homeowners the opportunity to originate their home loans or refinance their current home loans through the non-profit organization's America's Best Mortgage Program. With this program, homeowners purchase or refinance homes with, no down payment, no closing costs, no fees, no requirement for perfect credit, and at a below-market interest rate.
