The first Hunger Games poster isn't the biggest reveal of the last few weeks. In fact, it is more common practice for hot upcoming movies to leak trailers, and not just a poster. In the case of The Hunger Games, it is just as anticipated in many circles as The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man. But unlike those future epics, this one isn't ready to show very early footage yet, although it will be released much earlier.
For now, Lionsgate Studio is only willing to show off a poster- although it isn't a regular one. It was released online as a "motion poster," according to Yahoo! Movies, which shows the book's iconic mockingjay pin being set on fire, with the tagline "May The Odds Ever Be In Your Favor."
That kind of evocative image conveys to fans that the movie may be as epic as they hope, but it is hard to figure out without seeing a full trailer. At least three highly anticipated superhero epics are displaying teasers themselves, although they won't be out until next summer and are still filming right now.
But thanks to those limitations, there was only so much the first looks at Rises, Avengers and Spider-Man could show, which may not have been enough for rabid fans. Yet the fans for Hunger Games might wonder why they aren't getting as much by now. After all, while those comic book movies won't be out until the coming summer, this adaptation is coming out months earlier, on March 23, 2012.
Yet director Gary Ross seems to be going old school in not revealing any footage while he's still in the process of shooting the movie. That used to be the accepted norm, but that has been upended lately. However, there has been a lot to appease readers already, like the motion poster and the Entertainment Weekly cover story with star Jennifer Lawrence in her Katniss costume two months back.
Maybe those images aren't the same as revealing an actual teaser, but fans aren't being kept completely in the dark. In any case, considering the pressure to reveal everything in teasers, even a year in advance, credit can be given to this movie for trying to maintain some mystery, although it could have gone the other way.
Those who loved the books hope enough care is being given to the movies to make them worthwhile. The hints so far indicate it may just be the case, even without any footage out yet. But when a full teaser is ready, it will be just as much of an event as the leaked superhero trailers of the last few weeks.
For now, fans will have to pass time watching the poster burn down while the countdown slowly continues to March 2012 and the first full look at Katniss in action.
