Hunting and Fishing Areas Located in Southern West Virginia

WV DNR has several Wildlife Management Areas in southern West Virginia to fish and hunt. District 4 consists of Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming County in West Virginia. If you don't know where to hunt in West Virginia then you can visit one of the following areas to hunt:

Fayette County

Beury Mountain-located in Fayette County, West Virginia has over 3,061 acres for the adventurer type located close to Babcock State Park. Beury Mountain can be reached by driving to U.S Route 60 to Route 41. Camping is not allowed at Beury Mountain. However, Babcock State Park is very close if you plan on camping. The area is full of deer, squirrels and turkey's to hunt during each one's respective season.

Plum Orchard Lake-located in Fayette County, West Virginia has over 3,201 acres for hunting. This area has deer, raccoon, squirrel and turkey to hunt. Also, there is a 202 acre lake within the compound that has 4 boat launches and fish that consist of largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, sunfish and channel catfish. Plum Orchard is located just off I-77 in Pax, West Virginia. Plum Orchard Lake has around 42 campsites where you can camp out.

Greenbrier County

Meadow River-located in Greenbrier County, West Virginia has over 2,385 acres of woods and land for hunting the following game: deer, raccoon, grouse, woodcock and turkey. You can get to Meadow River by taking the Sam Black Church and Dawson exits off of I-64. You cannot camp at Meadow River.

Eastern Greenbrier-located in Greenbrier County, West Virginia that has over 5,130 acres of hunting land where you can hunt bear, deer, turkey, grouse and squirrel. You can get to Eastern Greenbrier Wildlife Management Area by taking exit 175 off of I-64. Also, this area has 12 regular cabins and 13 campsites that you can utilize while hunting the area.

Northern Cranberry-located in Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas and Greenbrier Counties in West Virginia consists of over 158,147 acres of hunting area. You can hunt bear, deer, squirrel, snowshoe hare and turkey on this Wildlife Management Area. Also, there are numerous fishing opportunities on the Northern Cranberry WMA that is comprised of Summit Lake, which is 42 acres. You can fish for trout on the North and South Fork of the Cherry River, Cherry River, Cranberry River and Williams River. There are numerous camping areas at Cranberry, Summit Lake, Bishop Knob and Big Rock.

McDowell County

Anawalt Lake-located in McDowell County, West Virginia features over 1,792 acres of prime hunting land in southern West Virginia. Here you can hunt bear, deer, squirrel, turkey and ruffed grouse. Also, the lake is around 7 acres and is stocked with trout. Also, you can catch other warm water fish such as bass and bluegill as well. You cannot camp at Anawalt Lake. The area is located about 20 miles to the south of Welch, West Virginia on Route 161 then you'll have to turn on Route 8 to get to the Wildlife Management Area.

Berwind Lake-located in McDowell County, West Virginia features over 85 acres for hunting deer, squirrel, raccoon and turkey. Also, the lake is around 20 acres and is stocked with trout. Hunting is tighter at this Wildlife Management Area based on being only 85 acres compared to other Wildlife Management Areas. You can camp at Berwind Lake because they have 8 campsites available for guests. You can reach this WMA by following Route 16 just about 12 miles south of Welch, West Virginia.

Tug Fork-located in McDowell County, West Virginia has over 2,165 acres of hunting lands where you can hunt for deer, bear, squirrel, grouse and turkey. Also, Tug Fork River runs through this Wildlife Management Area where you can catch most warm water fish such as bass, catfish and bluegill. You can reach this area by following Route 52 about 10 miles north of Welch, West Virginia. Camping is not permitted at this Wildlife Management Area.

Panther-located in McDowell County, West Virginia consists of over 7,810 acres of prime hunting land. You can hunt deer by a bow only as well as grouse and squirrel on this WMA. This area is also great for trapping bobcats and foxes as well. Also, this WMA has Panther Creek flowing through it that is stocked with trout. Panther Wildlife Management Area has 6 campsites that guests can use for overnight stays.

Mercer County

Bluestone Lake-located in Summers, Mercer and Monroe Counties in West Virginia contains over 18,109 acres of hunting and fishing land. You can hunt deer, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon and turkey on this WMA. Also, you can trap for bobcats, foxes, minks and muskrats as well. This WMA features one of the biggest lakes in the state in Bluestone Lake, which has over 1,970 acres of water that is full of largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, crappie, panfish and channel catfish. This WMA has 330 campsites available for use by guests. Bluestone Lake is located on Route 20 in West Virginia.

Tate Lohr-located in Mercer County, West Virginia consists of 500 acres of hunting land. You can hunt for deer, squirrels, raccoons and turkey at Tate Lohr. You cannot camp at this Wildlife Management area. Tate Lohr is located 4 miles south of Oakvale, West Virginia off of US Route 460.

Camp Creek-located in Mercer County, West Virginia contains 5,300 acres of land. You can hunt deer, turkey, raccoon, fox, grouse, and squirrels. You can reach Camp Creek right off I-77 south of Raleigh County. You can fish at Camp Creek that is stocked with trout throughout the year. Camping is available at Camp Creek State Park that contains 26 campsites available for guests.

Monroe County

Moncove Lake-located in Monroe County, West Virginia contains 775 acres of hunting land. You can hunt deer, squirrel, turkey, rabbit and grouse at this WMA. You can reach Moncove Lake off of Route 3 from Union to Route 8. Moncove Lake WMA features a 144 acre lake that you can fish for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. You cannot camp at Moncove Lake WMA, but you can camp at Moncove Lake State Park.

Cove Creek-is located in Monroe County, West Virginia as part of the George Washington National Forest. This WMA contains 428 acres of hunting land. You can hunt bear, deer, squirrel, turkey and grouse on this WMA. You can also fish at Cove Creek that is stocked with trout. Camping is available at various sites at the Cove Creek WMA.

Potts Creek-is located in Monroe County, West Virginia is part of Jefferson National Forest contains 18,526 acres of hunting land. You can hunt bear, deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit and grouse at Potts Creek WMA. You can fish at Potts Creek since it's stocked with trout. Camping is available at Little Mountain and Binocular Patch.

Raleigh County

No Wildlife Management Areas within Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Wyoming County

Horse Creek Lake-is located in Wyoming County, West Virginia and has 47.91 acres of hunting land. You can hunt deer, raccoon and squirrel at this WMA. Also, you can fish at Horse Creek Lake and catch largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish and trout at the lake. Camping is not permitted at this WMA.

R.D. Bailey Lake-is located in Wyoming County, West Virginia contains 17,280 acres of hunting land. You can hunt for bear, deer with a bow only, squirrel, turkey, grouse and raccoon. You can also trap for beaver, bobcat, muskrat, coyote and fox at the WMA as well. Also, you can fish at R.D. Bailey Lake that is over 630 acres of fishing water. You can catch largemouth and smallmouth bass, hybrid striped bass, channel catfish, tiger musky, walleye and trout. You can camp at the WMA since it has over 169 tent areas for camping. Also, you can camp at nearby Twin Falls State Park as well as Panther State Forest.
