Hurricane Earl a Real Threat for North Carolina Islands

Richard Banks
One of the most popular roads in North Carolina is NC Highway 12. Once you are on this road, you know you are close to the Outer Banks. Hurricane Earl has threatened this storied highway by casing officials to post mandatory evacuations.

Ocracoke Island, a small island on the North Carolina coastline, issued mandatory evacuations late Tuesday for no residents. This total is seasonally adjusted to approximately 800 people. The local residents totaling 800 have the option to stay and weather out the storm.

The only access to the mainland is the ferry. The ferry began evacuations at 6 a.m. this morning for non-locals. The 2 ½ hour ferry trip will be handled by two ferries, potentially running throughout the night to ensure safe passage.

Along with Ocracoke Island, Dare County officials have ordered the evacuation of Hatteras Island. Not included in the evacuation are visitors vacationing in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Dare City Mainland, and Roanoke.

Lying in wait is potential Hurricane Fiona. As of 9/1/2010, she is moving 15mph with sustained winds of 60mph. She is following the same course as Hurricane Earl, passing dangerously close to the Leeward Islands.

Projected paths take potential Hurricane Fiona on a more westerly approach to the eastern seaboard. Just like Hurricane Earl, a path can be adjusted by the high and low pressure systems surrounding the storm. Once Hurricane Earl has moved on, will potential Hurricane Fiona set its sights on the eastern seaboard?

If two storms weren't enough, the Atlantic Ocean is churning yet another tropical storm. Within the next 24 hours, hurricane analysts are predicting another named storm. Potential Tropical Depression Gaston has an 80% chance of forming into a storm.

So is the eastern seaboard headed for a one two punch? Preparation is the key to ultimate survival. Read more on preparation efforts at: First Person: As Hurricane Earl Nears, N.C. Family Readies with Ziploc Bags, Evacuation Plan and Are You Ready for Hurricane Earl?
