The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu is issuing advisories on hurricane Flossie for the active volcanic island of Hawai'i, which experienced a 5.4 earthquake on Monday, August 13, at 7:38 p.m. Hawaiian Standard Time. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, (HVO), has issued a watch for Volcanic-Alert Level Orange. Seismic graphs are available at the HVO website. .

The most recent Watch Warning Information is located online at the National Weather Services Forecast Office located in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Winds are forecasted at "40 to 50 miles per hour with gusts up to 60", according to NWSFO's hurricane and flash flood watch report.

Public schools were closed today and at least one shelter in each district will be open tonight on the Big Island. The Hurricane Local Statement will advise at the end of the report when the next update will be.

For emergency preparedness, the authorities advise not storing bottled water longer than 6 months. Why is that? Is it because of the female hormones seeping out of the plastic bottle that ruins the water? They have cisterns in Jerusalem for thousands of years in storage that do not go bad. Is Naloegene a better bottle? If so, then why?

BPA or Bisphenol A, is an estrogen chemical used to make the plastic soda bottles. The symbol number seven is used to identify polycarbonate, which is known to leach BPA. Almost 100% of all baby bottles in the world are made from polycarbonate plastic. Although the National Institute of Health (NIH) says the low levels are safe, it seems that long term storage of water in plastic bottles would result in excess estrogen in the human body.

As reported by Rafael B, on August 13, estrogen poisoning is at extremely low levels during certain prenatal development times "according to the magazine Reproductive Toxicology." Yet, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) Center for the Evaluation of Risks to Human Reproduction (CERHR) says that BPA is hardly a risk. Most government warnings against long term storage of emergency water in plastic bottles focus on bacteria from reusing juice bottles rather than due to hormonal concerns.

For a pdf wallet sized chart of which plastics to avoid, then go here to print out the card. The safest plastics for water storage are number two high-density polyethylene HDPE, number four low-density polyethylene LDPE, and number five polypropylene PP. Number one polyethylene terephthalate PET should never be reused to store food.
