This past weekend Hurricane Igor graced the entire East Coast with some of the best surf of the year. Seeing as though I was car-less and frothing for some good waves, I did what any surfer worth the salt in their ears would do. I went to Brooklyn.

I've written before about surf in Brooklyn and the New York City surfing experience, and this past weekend was a prime example of what Brooklyn, and Rockaway Beach especially can offer up when the surf gets good.

Of course I took the A train out to 90th Street and I couldn't have made a better decision. The lifeguards were gone so we weren't relegated to the surfing only section of the beach. Perfect 6 to 8 foot a-frames were hitting the jetties, running down the beach and finishing with a flourish of spitting water and sand.

I surfed all day Friday and Saturday. The waves were as good as I have ever seen in Brooklyn. Perfect offshore winds, sunny skies and warm water all made the hour and a half train ride worth it ten times over.

I even caught my best wave of the year, a solid eight-foot draining tube that spun across the sandbar and spit me out in a few inches of water. It was critical but exhilarating at the same time.

I hope that hurricane season is just heating up. I'm not ready for the cold water and frigid winds that come with winter surfing!
