It is important to take note that most of the homeowner's insurance policies might not have coverage for hurricane damage. At times hurricane insurance is a separate policy that needs to be purchased. Your hurricane insurance should cover high winds that are associated with the hurricane, and some lines of hurricane insurance might even extend coverage for damage caused by tornado and fires. However, the flooding that follows the hurricane is generally very intense and this type of coverage can sometimes not be covered under your hurricane insurance and leave you fighting with your insurance company. This further calls for specialized hurricane insurance for securing your home from the damage caused by such a phenomena.
Hurricane insurance can be added through your homeowner's insurance company. Some hurricane insurance policies can cover water damage caused by storms or rain surges. You should check with your homeowner's policy to see if hurricane insurance has been added on your policy and if it covers flood damage. If not, flood insurance is fairly cheap and easy to add. Having hurricane insurance and flood insurance will protect your home in the event that you have damages during a hurricane.
In areas, such as Florida, where the risk of hurricanes is quite high, it can be difficult to find suitable Hurricane insurance for your home. Many companies do not even insure houses in coastal areas because of the high costs involved and the possibilities that a hurricane will hit. Other companies either have the clause of specialty coverage or high deductibles, reaching as high as 10% of your home's value. This can be a hefty cost for hurricane insurance, in addition to your regular homeowner's insurance.
Mostly it is important to have complete knowledge of the Hurricane insurance you have, as your hurricane insurance will determine the way the claims on your home will be handled and the many independent variables that affect it. In addition, keep in mind that while you are buying hurricane insurance, make sure there is not only coverage for water damage but for damage by flood as well. Generally, the deductibles for hurricane insurance are not the traditional kind of standard deductibles but percentage deductibles.
The last word of caution, when ever there is any damage caused by a hurricane or anything else, make sure you contact your insurance company as soon as you notice the damage. There may be a set period to file a hurricane insurance claim, or any other homeowner insurance claim. These are some important points to consider while looking for hurricane insurance.
