The mood in and around New York City on Sunday was very somber. Many people seemed as though suddenly woken from a very vivid flight of fancy. Had they imagined all this week-long preparations for this massive storm which amounted to little more than rain and some wind? Had that all really happened or had it all been a dream?
Many friends on Facebook were checking in from around the nation to see that we were all okay; many friends from in and around the five boroughs were more upset their weekend plans had been ruined for what many considered a non-event.
"Well this storm was a dud," said my one friend Jessica, originally from Canada who had been anxiously anticipating the ravages of Hurricane Irene all week. She was without a home phone or an internet signal at her apartment but still was able to check in with her mobile device.
This was a sentiment shared across many channels; my wife and I were able to escape harm on a diverted route back up to her parent's house for the day, but duty will bring us both back to the city come daybreak.
For now we can all just kick back and breathe a sigh of relief for the tragedy that almost was but thankfully was not.
